hmm... what 968's have you been looking at?
|
Thanks for the reply's everyone. Money arrived today for my first 911 project car I'm selling. Now when the other buyer arrives then my hunt for the perfect 944 / 924S starts :D
If you know of any nice documented 944s for sale in Chicago and the surrounding 100 mile raidus please let me know. |
i feel as though you'd be better off finding a great-condition 944 than a shoddy-condition 951, especially considering that 944-series prices are on the rise (FINALLY!), and $7800 probably wouldn't get you a GREAT 951. It might, but it might not.
If you are willing to spend an extra $1000 or so, however, go for the 951. I have owned both a 944 and a 951, and the Turbo is DEFINITELY the way to go. |
My plans right now actually are to sell my 924S around the summertime, I was not considering letting it go so soon, but...
I'm in the St. Louis area. If you're looking to spend around the 5K mark on a 924S, not mint, but suitable for daily driving, with only 95K miles... mine may be up for sale. If you feel like waiting for summer, then it will most definitely be up for sale. I'm looking to move up into 968 or Boxster territory. |
Not going to get much in 968 land for $7.5k
As said before, it will get you either a great 944, a decent 944S2, or if you work hard enough an ok 951 |
you need to make a choice and start a new thread with pictures that says "LOOK WHAT SEVEN GRAND GOT ME!" :)
|
Chis, I think it's beyond time for you to put your money where your mouth is.........
|
My 951 was $8000. 18k on the Turbo S engine and running gear, 93k on the body. Mechanically perfect, except for a manifold leak. Body is pretty good; it's getting about $1000 worth of nitpicky scratches taken out next winter.
I think $7500 is a fairly decent amount, just don't expect perfection. Might be wise to wait until you get $7500 for the car you want, and $2000 for whatever repairs it needs. |

Schumi I sent you a PM.

I paid $7000 for my 87 951, 125K but well cared for and a few good engine mods. Also got a full set of factory service manuals.
Don't buy a 928 unless you want to pay the cost of a new boxster in repairs. |
OK guys going to look at my first 944 on thursday. A 87 944 with 107K with records. All belts done at 90K (2yrs ago). Only thing it is a automatic trans. I'm not going to race, AX, or DE the car so I think I would be ok with a AT. Any issues that I should look for with AT? Pictures look good, but you never know until you see it in person. Asking price is $4900 OBO.
|
If the belts are 2 years old, regardless of the miles on them, they should probably be redone.
And I have never driven an AT 944 but from what I hear around the acceleration is absolutely dreadful. |

If it was me again, I would go for a $5000-6k 924S and keep the remainder for fixes, although that much coin for a 924S should get you one damn near perfect.
An automatic would not be my cup of tea- I had that trans on an Audi 200 (considerably more torque) and it was painfully mismatched. If you have a reason (terrible traffic, health problems) then go for the auto, but if its just searching for the perfect car, a perfect one with a manual will crop up. |
I find no problems driving the manual in traffic, even heavy downtown St. Louis/Manchester traffic during the christmas shopping season.
It isn't bad to do with that kinda torque. |
I bought my '86 944 turbo for $8,500. good running condition, leaks a bit of oil but I'm going to fix that when i make it back to cali. It came with a few upgrades... rims, chips, cat delete...
The pickup that the car has really throws you back... i remember when I went from an 89 honda civic hatchback to the 85 porsche 944... i could tell a huge difference... (50hp difference). and now I've got a car that has over 100hp difference than the 944 NA... Test drive a turbo, see how it is. Play the field a little ;-) |
Drove the 87 94 with AT trans. It was ok, not really what I want. I'm really getting into to this whole car shopping thing :-)

If you test a turbo, you will buy it. Just realize that now.
