So what should $7500 get me?
 

Hi gang,

I'm a 914 guy, but a lover of all Porsche models. I am in the process of selling my pair of 71 911 T project cars and once I have the cold hard cash I will have around $7500 to spend.

I'm thinking either a 944 or 924S is they way to go. I want another Porsche (I have awesome 914 I AX) for more of daily driver, aprrox 200 miles a week. I have been reading up on what repair issues to look for when it comes to 944's, but just trying to get a feel of what I should expect for $7500? Any thoughts?

you might be able to get a decent 951 for that.

that said, $7500 should get you a well sorted, problem free 944 or 944S.

I just purchased a 1988 normally aspirated Porsche 944 with 17k miles. The car had been stored for 6 years and I purchased it from an estate.

Although it has very low miles, because it had been stored and not started in 6 years I had to do some maintenance - including new timing and balance shaft belts, bearings & seals. New hoses and regular belts, replaced all fluids including cooling, oil, power steering, and brake fluid. Changed the gas in the tank and changed the fuel filter and one rubber fuel hose. I also had to replace the fuel pressure regulator because it was leaking pressure after the engine was turned off; causing hard starting.

That being said, the car is like a brand new car. I paid $6k for the car and about $2k in maintenance and tires.

p.s. I have a 1974 Porsche 914 2.0 which I love driving but the 944 is better for daily driving. See attached photos of my babies:

you might consider a 928 also (don't shoot me 944 board!!)

944 turbo should be able to be had fairly easily :)

Spending 7500$ on a 928 might not get you much except maybe a mid mileage early car or maybe a high mileage later model with some problems. I would say that $7500 to $8500 can get you a perfect, problem free n/a 944, but for a good problem free 928 thats more like 12-13K$, and more like 15K$ for the later models like the S4. And to be honest I wouldn't like to own any model of 928 besides an S4..

A cheap 928 is nothing but nightmares. Just like a cheap 944.

For $7500 you could get a low low mileage (30-40K) showroom condition 924S. And they make pretty good semi-daily drivers.

$7500 would probably get you my very well sorted '88 924S..but I'd have to think awfully hard about that.

I paid a similar amount in Canadian dollars for both my cars.

my first 944 had no dents damage rust or paintwork. The dash was crack free and the seats were perfect. The car also came with new struts, belts waterpump, clutch, decent tires. Basically a perfect car.

My 944s which I purchased for the same amount 1 year later had all the AC redone, the head freshened up and was also in very good shape. $5-$6k in repairs in the pervious few years, the "problems" with the car are a worn seat bolster and a cracked dash.

For $7500 you can look at pretty much any 944 out there, I would settle for no less than a car with maintenance records that is in need of nothing. Even with this as a starting point you can still expect to take car of the ussual things that can and do happen to a near 20 year old car.

Lets also throw out there that I paid about half that amount of money for a mechanically sound 87 924S with a perfect interior, mechanically sound engine and drive, but with no service history besides the seller's word, and some small door dings, and 90K miles.

6K will get you a perfect 924S with perfect mechanical history, and that extra money could go towards suspension upgrades if you want to DE or autocross it.

Or spends all 7500 and get an absolute perfect 944. If you look hard enough, you can find a perfect one for less. I met a guy once that bought an '87, silver, saratoga top, no dings, good history, nice interior, well sorted car for around 4200$. And I was jealous as hell when I saw this beauty.

hell, for 7500, i MIGHT consider selling my 951...

7500 will definitely buy you a turbo! If I did it again, that's what I'd do... I have that much in my NA and even though it's in nice shape, it still has no booooooost! The NA is nice but it will always be 'slow'.

There are tons of them around... heck for a 10, there's a local 951 with only 35K miles on it. So you should def be able to find some examples for that.

$7500 should get you a like new trouble free 944 (get a PPI)
