AFM spring...please help
hello,...me ..again...
can someone pls tell me how can i know the right position of the spring inside the AFM?? because from when i got the car i have noticed that someone was messing with the AFM...and i think that someone have moved the position of the spring...because i have a big fuel consumption ..and it must be because of that (i have replaced everything else)..to buy i new one it's not a good option..a used one cant find ( i have a 85.5 model )..and i heard that u can not put a late DME and a early AFM ..right?? so,can i bring it to the right position???? please help |

You can pick up used ones on ebay constantly for a small amount of money. It shouldn't be a problem to move the wiper arm over a bit on the resistor.
Can you list what you have tried to fix this problem?

Just my 2 cents...I chased my a s s on my 944 for a momentary hesitation I never located. During the search I replaced my AFM, the new used one was no better than what I threw away. The fix for the AFM's as described in other posts was marginal at best. I read somewhere before I sold my car of someone putting a hotwire Ford AFM in instead of ther stock unit. I don't know if it worked or whether it's a good solution but I'd look into it before I put a twenty something year old unit in the car as a new used part, good luck.

A place called promax sells the MAF kit for the late 944's. Its exspensive though, $900 bucks.
Here's the site.... http://www.promax.uku.co.uk/ You could get a python injection one from pelican, or find a used one in good shape. That's what I would do anyways, unless you plan on doing major peformance work to the car later on. |

That spring is preset at birth and not to be used for adjustment or at least it is not suggested. Much easier way to adjust for running rich as you appear to be running. One main cause of this hesitation is the wiper track. It becomes grooved and pitted. You will get better results moving the wiper pick up to a different line. A small chip in the material can go unseen to the eye and cause the blip in rpm. The groove can cause the wiper to miss areas of the track matrerial as well. Adjust fuel/air by the adjustment screw located in the AFM body. It may have the cap on but the screw is down that port hole. Move it a little at a time. Also need to check O2 readings to adjust correctly.
See Clarks-garage dot com for the wiper issue repair and o2 adjustment for your model. If a late car the ISV needs bypassed by use of a jump wire on the diagnostic plug located on the pass. fender near the brake booster. You can use a late AFM on an early car as long as the DME is from the same year as the meter. Dal

yes,someone took the black cover out..and moved the spring..i do not know in witch way..i have removed the the wiper pick up to a different line..i have excellent reading on the gas analyzer..good fuel/air mixture..but that it is on idle...do not know what the nr should be on different rpm..i have a big fuel consumption 16l/100km in the city..and it is big (from what i know) for my car (85.5 ,2.5l ,163 hp).i have changed pretty much everything ,and all that i think it is because of the AFM,that if u move the spring ,the AFM will have different readings on the rpm range..not on the idle..i do not have o2 sensor.
i also pretty unsure for a used AFM...and a new one ![]() inside there is a plastic toothed wheel with numbers marked around the edge to indicate the spring tension but all the marks are 500 ... can it be a way to bring it to factory settings?? ![]() Last edited by dally_de; 02-22-2007 at 03:37 AM.. |

No O2 sensor leaves it running an open loop so it will run richer w/o it. A rebuilt AFM is available at a decent price in comparison to a new meter. Paragon offers them, not certain about Pelican Parts, have a look. Used meters need a good looking at before purchasing. Most used ones are not that great and were removed for that reason but if you can find a seller w/one off a good running salvage car it is well worth the money to snag it.
As the spring goes you may be able to match it up to a virgin meter and reset the spring to the number on the good meter...or take it to a Porsche tech for tweeking. Personally I would just get a rebuilt AFM/verified used one and kill the suspense. Dal

Sad to say but sometimes we all must take out a "mortgage" to keep our machines in top running order but this issue should be EZ to resolve relatively inexpensive. For a used unit it just takes some research in the seller and where the meter came from.

To set an AFS you need an adjustable flow of air through the unit. Think Wilks had a web page about what resistance you should read at given angles of deflection for the baffle. I may have the graphics somewhere on the 300 gig hard drive.

New ones are around 200 dollars here on Pelican but they are not Bosch brand. They have Bosch but they are significantly higher. I haven't ever used the other brand and I don't know anyone that has so I don't know how well they work.
I am guessing you have a ROW car...if not, then why are you not running an O2 sensor?

the car is not equipped with o2sensor..i have little doubts to buy an used one...someone have one from a 87-88 car(the AFM from 85.5-91 all should have the same code on the black cover) ???...it will match??
i would prefer to fix mine..i didnt found any link on adjusting the afm beside Clark's Garage..but i did adjust it like there and no efect.,.. SoCal Driver ..IT WOULD BE GREAT IF U WOULD FIND THAT GRAPHIC...
