synthetic brake fluid
I replaced by brake pads on my '84 NA with some Mintex pads from Pelican and I thought it would be a good time to flush and bleed the entire brake system. I went down to the local FLAPS and purchased some Prestone Synthetic brake fluid (glycol based DOT 3), but I am having 2nd thoughts about using it in a 23 year-old Porsche. I'm wondering if the seals in my brake system and clutch system are compatible with these new brake fluids. Does anyone out there have any experience with synthetic brake fluids? If there is any chance of a problem I would rather not take a chance in damaging my seals.....I can always put the synthetic stuff in the wife's Camry.

I could be wrong, but I don't think it matters as long as it's a DOT 3 or 4 fluid. If your seals are bad, they would be bad with anykind of DOT 3 or 4 fluid I reckon.
What you don't want to use is something like DOT 5 or 5.1. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

I think Dot5 is totally different. It's some kind of silicone-based fluid, or something like that.

DOT 3 and 4 fluid formulations are completely compatible with each other, the differences are in the boiling points.
DOT 5 is silicone based, and not at all compatible with a DOT 3 or DOT 4 system. I am not sure on DOT 5.1, it may be compatible, check the bottle. I have seen a system designed for one fluid (DOT5) in which the wrong fluid (DOT 3) dissolved the seals. |

I've used the Valvoline stuff, too, in my Preludes. Seemed to work well...

I'm rebuilding the calipers anyway, so I think I will give it a try. Thanks for the input.

To the best of my knowledge brake fluid does not exist naturally, it's all synthetic.
DOT 3, 4 and 5.1 are compatible DOT 5 is not compatible with the others. Harley Davidson uses DOT 5, there must be others but I don't know of them.
