Help!
I wrote earlier that the cooling fans on my 1989 944S2 were running constantly - ran down the battery overnight. I ordered a new thermo-fan switch from pelican (overnight for big $$$). It arrived today - and I don't know what I have - or what I need. The switch I took out is 19mm across the flats - the one Pelican sent is 30mm across the flats. My old one has 2 contacts - the new one has 3. The switch I took out is Bosch # 0280130026. Thee is only 85 degrees on the new one. Here is where the switch I took out (hole) is located on my 1989 944S2: http://www.naturephotostudio.com/944S2/Engine-Top.jpg Here is the old switch in the engine: http://www.naturephotostudio.com/944S2/Old-In-Place.jpg Here is the old and new plug side by side: http://www.naturephotostudio.com/944S2/Old-New-Side.jpg And, here are the connection for the old and the new switch: http://www.naturephotostudio.com/944S2/Old-new-Plug.jpg Am I in the wrong place with the wrong switch??? If the 30mm switch is correct - Where does it go?? I can get a new Bosch # 0280130026 at a local parts store today. But - it is getting close to Miller time on a Friday and I want to do this job this weekend. Any help???? Where is the thermo-fan switch on a 1989 944S2 (not 944 or 944S -but S2). Dick |

big $$$$, they're about $18 and are hi or lo temp, the lower being a few $$more.
it's a 30mm, some 1 1/8 will work. i used a deep socket and had the car on ramps and didn't take the radiator out. same place as all of them. upper left part of the radiator.

You have the dme temp sensor (blue plug)
the thermo fan switch is on the radiator itself............ hehehehe

like AE said, the one in the BLOCK is the DME temp sensor, has nothing to do with your fans. the one in the rad, the 30mm one, is the one that operates the fans.

Thanks to all. I was in the wrong place. And - that is WHY I asked. The big $$$$ was for the Fed Ex - the part was cheap. And now to find the real switch - and a 30mm deep socket.. Dick |

Thanks to all, again. OK, I found the thermo-fan switch - down below the hose - right on the radiator. Man - that will be hard to get to. The DME sensor was out in the open and right on top. What shoudl I take off to make the job a little easier? Air intake box?? I'm pretty good at working on my 356C - but the 944S2 is nothing but wires and hoses. I wish my town had a Porsche dealer. My car is dead and the closest one is over an hour away by interstate. On the other hand - I do enjoy working on the cars, and I will enjoy the 944 learning process. I bought the entire 944 factory manual set, but it seems to be lacking a lot of S2 information. Dick |

OK - the answer seems to be - do it from below. Thanks to the Clarks Garage site.
I'll try that in the morning. http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/cool-05.htm Dick |

Easier to do it from above.
Take out the AFM and you will have enough space.

OK. The job is done and my fans are back under control. Pelican did send the right part. Thanks to them.
I did the thermo-fan switch repalcement from below. The deep 1 1/8 inch socket made the job easy after taking off my tray. I used my Craftsman 1/2 inch torque meter to tighten it up to 20 nm. The hardest part was waiting to get all the air out of the bleeder. Many thanks to all who helped - and to those who taught me about the DME temeperature sensor! Dick |
