It"s Alive!
This is the 87 that I towed home from NY. It's been sitting in my garage as I gradually made its aquaintance. I disassembled the front end of the motor to check on the situation as far as belts goes, and having found that they didn't look too bad I decided to check my compression. Couldn't get the thing to turn over although it was getting juice to the starter. Took the starter off and disassembled it and the cable that runs from the solenoid into the brush unit was completely rotted off. Nobody seems to sell parts for these although you can get rebuilt starters so somebody must make brushes...
Any how found one used on ebay for about $40 and after a week or so it arrived. Results range from 180 to 190 psi. For what its worth, when I started cranking the first cylinder only pumped up to about 145 and the second one was higher and the third one full pressure. I figure that the bores and rings and pistons were pretty dry. After the fourth one I went back and tried the first and second - sure enough - 190. So anyway I thought I'd try to fire it up - not remembering that I had unplugged the AFM as well as the sensor connections at the back of the head. Obviously no start. Any way later I remembered what was disconnected and tonight after making the right connections it fired right up. Only for a moment of course - I need to do the belt and probably rollers, etc. But hey It sounded pretty good.

So because the existing belts "didn't look so bad" you left them on the engine?

yeah, it's nice to get reassurance that you're not wasting your time... I've been known to fire engines (briefly) without any belts at all just to make sure they'd run before spending my time/money on stuff like new water pumps etc. - of course this doesn't work on a Porsche! if you don't have a belt, you're walking!

Definately belts etc. is next on the list - just hate to spend money and effort if the rest of the motor was junk.
