I'm thinking about buying a 1987 924s.
This is a vehicle that sat in storage for about 14 months. There were no oil pressure issues when the car was stored. When it came out of storage, it would not build oil pressure. The gauge was tested and it works properly. I've heard two theories: (1) clogged oil sending pipe in the sump from accumulated sludge while in storage or (2) oil pump lost prime in storage and won't draw oil. The current owner tried to blow it would with transmission oil and oil to no avail. Anyone have any experience with 2.5L motors with no oil pressure? This car is a bargain otherwise. What am I looking at to fix this? Is this a motor-in-car repair, or worse? (I'm a 912/ Aircooled guy. A lot this this H2O stuff is new to me.) Please help if you can! Thanks!

Have the car level! Do not have it on jack stands. If you look at Clark's Garage at the oil flow diagram you will see the oil pickup and it needs to be flat or you will suck air. Make sure you remove the fuel pump relay or you will rinse the cyl with gas as you try to build pressure. One member took off the oil filter and put a rubber hose over the threaded end and sucked until the oil came up. Make sure the crankshaft nut is tight as the oil pump is driven by only this nut pressure. If you suspect the oil pressure sending switch be careful of the terminals, they break easily. Do not grind the starter for longer than 8-10 seconds or you may burn out the starter. Good luck.

You can prime the pump by removing the oil filter and pouring oil down the center.
Unless you can get it primed and showing oil pressure within 30 minutes, it probably isn't worth buying.

AFJuvat, would you clarify the "30 minute" item. Is the engine running with no pressure? I saw this on a Florida TV infomercial years ago. The engine had been drained of oil-thus no oil pressure. I think they called the product "BeDuped". (Komisch)

Well now we have a very common problem with this engine. #2 bearing blow ouit. 0 oil presure follows. Once running it may show 1/2 bar or somthing real low if any. First thing, if the seller says he hasn't done this already is drain and inspect the oil. See lots of metle particles????
Remove one of the six cam tower cover hex nuts on top. Is there any oil? These pumps don't go. Your probable still looking at a new/rebuilt/replacement engine.

No, meaning if you can't prime the pump and have the motor running with good oil pressure within 30 minutes, there is most likely a severe problem and you will never get good oil pressure.
Do not, under any circumstances, run the car without oil pressure. You can pull the DME relay and crank the motor to get oil pressure. AFJ

Step two: Paint it up all shiny so it looks good on TV. Step three: Use the best synthetic oil while the cameras are on. When it is pumped out, there is enough residual oil on the bearings to keep the engine running for several minutes no matter what kind of pukey crap you're trying to sell. |
