Tranny repairable? More bad news.

Well, Got some strange noises, and I took the car home, and left it for the night.

Got under the car, and this is what I found.

A great big gaping hole in my transaxle resovoire.

If I was to weld metal onto this, the only real purpose it serves is to hold gear oil right?

For the record, I *JUST* had this replaced and the shop broke it. AND my head gasket blew. A little strapped for cash, and that is the current status.
MESSED UP.

Thanks!
-Alex

I'd be more concerned about how that gaping hole got there... if you have 100% confidence that that hole was caused by something external to the trans then yeah, by all means weld it... but I'd have two concerns.

1) to do a proper weld that area is going to have to be 100% spotlessly eat-off-of-it clean, which will be difficult to accomplish without opening it up.

2) you're always going to wonder if there's a loose bit inside the trans that is going to blow another hole in it.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but if it were me I'd be shopping for a used trans, and/or having it completely rebuilt.

I agree with nate....how did that hole get there? That's the key to the fix.

Well I'm gonna drop it then take it to a transaxle shop and have them crack it open and look at the damage because I drove on it a bit :\

Then I'm hoping I can weld that sucker up.

Unfortunatly I don't really have the money to buy (another) tranny.

It's for the turbo, so expect 650-700 :\

Unless you have one, and you are my guardian angel

At any rate, I have reason to beleive the mechanic did it, and stuck a bolt in there, although I could be wrong, starting another thread asking for help from the tranny gurus regarding what kind of bolts are in the tranny.

More info to come.

I will tell you now that 2-3 other people have gotten trannys from him and had them blow up soon after.
AND
There are other people who have been screwed by him other ways
AND
The bolt I found didn't come from the tranny. (Not confirmed yet)

I *can* tell you that I will know for sure about the bolt later possibly today.
