I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on the automatics.
On my search for a good deal I've seen some 944's in great shape but are autos. I cant believe Porsche ever went there but it works for chevy. Does anyone one have anything good (or bad) to say about them. I personally dont think I could live with one. Dave |

i used to have one, it wasn't in spectacular shape, nor was it that fun to drive. i'll second the 'don't do it' vote.
i've never enjoyed driving a vehicle with an automatic transmission.

IIRC, the automatics for the 944's are a three speed, very sluggish, and very sloppy.

I have to put in another vote for he!! no!
I just sold my '83 auto. If you want a car that will look nice in a collection go for it. However, if you want a car to drive... run away! They are extremely sluggish, and rev fairly high for the speed of the car. They just aren't "fun", not to mention it's just more moving parts to go bad. -Nick

they are in fact three speed audi units, geared so that redline is 130 mph in third gear. they are slower than the stick shift cars, and the characteristics of the transmission around town are (to me) very annoying. the motor likes to stay at 3000 rpm unless you're on the highway, and then the rpm's seem to be very high compared to a manual car. the one in my car wasn't sluggish or sloppy, at least not after it was rebuilt, but it still wasn't nearly as enjoyable to drive as a car with a manual transmission.

Used to have one also, my 924S. Was a good daily driver, but not a great highway car. Transmission shifts were very smooth surprisingly. The car is a real dog though, 0-60 in probably more than 9 seconds.
3 speed is correct, also no overdrive. The engine is turning 3500+ rpm at 60mph.

I hate to say it but my '88 is an automatic. I bought it a couple of months ago out of an estate sale and the car only had 17k miles and was pretty mint. I didn't want an automatic but the price was right and the car looks great.
The pros: It's nice to drive while holding a cup of coffee since there are no cup holders. I can't think fo any more pros. The cons: Since I really wanted a stick, I tend to downshift into second (pretending it's a stick) and it down shifts pretty sluggishly. I also find my self at red lights covering the T-shifter with my hand so that nobody in other cars happens to notice the "automatic Porsche".....I'm so vein. I really don't have any of the problems listed in the other posts. The car seems to drive like a normal car and the rpm's are not overly high. As soon as I can figure out how to do it, I'm getting me a 5 speed and making the switch. My only saving grace is that I have a 914 that's a 5-speed manual and I get my sports car driving fix with that. Vern Last edited by Tidybuoy; 03-18-2007 at 08:20 PM.. |
