Spring Cleaning

Today was my first Sunday off in literally about 4 months or so, so I thought I'd spend the evening giving the old 951 a tune-up and an oil change, and some cleaning.

The good news: the old oil was clean, no metal fragments, no milkshake.

The bad news: the spark plugs were so worn that they look like they'd never been changed, and the gap was WAY off (it was bigger than .050, when the correct gap is .028-.031). I also saw the wires arcing a bit after I changed the plugs. I thought this was odd on a car that had every service record for the last 15 years or so. I wonder if the cap and rotors have ever been changed.

The PO told me the car had a "major tune-up" right before I bought it, but the condition of the plugs makes me think that either he fibbed or was fibbed-to by his mechanic. I am guessing the latter because he seemed very honest and sincere.

So, the next free afternoon/evening I have, I will probably do wires, cap, and rotor. At least the car is sparkling now...

Some pics of the decor...

Wax anyone?

lookin' good man! i LOVE that color

i need to check the plugs and wires on my cars too... it's been awhile, and the 944's had some avgas through her, so the plugs are probably due for a cleaning. i'm starting to wonder if i should replace some FPR's too... so much to do, so little time

I actually have Lindsey Racing's 3.0 bar FPR on the way So I can turn up the boost a little (emphasis on the little, I am paranoid about blowing the head gasket).

I will probably install the FPR along with a new cap, rotor, and wires set.

Yup, next weekend is taken off from my job for detailing my car. Should take one full day for all 8 steps (sun up to sun down) to get the outside cleaned off the way I want it. The next day I plan on checking out why my brakes are squealing and why my car won't start sometimes. I have my priorities straight, don't I?

To me, detailing the car is one of the most rewarding parts of automobile ownership. Reminds you of how much you love those lines of the car, and it really garners some attention.

Wow that is a really small world. Especially since Siena is such a small school.

Its not possible to install the steam vent kit with the cylinder head still on the car.

Unless of course you want chunks of aluminum floating around your cooling system.

Its a modification to the rear of the cylinder head that allows coolant to flow from here back into the expansion tank. Air typically gets trapped in the rear most section of the cylinder head causing hot spots. Really only a problem if you do not bleed the cooling system on your car correctly. It just makes life easier.

By datable - do you mean available? .

J/k J/k...well if she's in any history or education courses, maybe I'll see her around.

Next time you come visit her maybe we can have a 944 day at Siena. One of the professors has a n/a one, too. It's a little beat but it's still a 944.

Hey man -- Mistakes happen

I don't always bleed perfect

Either way, if bubbles or coolant stop flowing, it's a good sign something is wrong.

Cheap insurance

There is a fairly large write up on 944online.com.
You may want to wait until you pull the head, because yes, you do have to take it off
