How much should belts / waterpump service cost?

I was wondering what everyone's shop usually charges for timing, balance, general roller maintenance, and waterpump.

I am trying to price some shops and I just got off the phone with one place that I know is very knowledgeable on our cars, and said they always do the waterpump at the same time and usually end up replacing some seals. They quoted me 2000$.

I know labor for these cars is pricey- I guess I wasn't sure how pricey. So far I have wrenched on everything needed done myself so the bills have all been just parts. But I wouldn't have the tools or cajones to do the belts myself.

What does your guy's local shops charge? Are the seals that expensive to replace also? I know that once they guy got in there they would end up replacing a seal or two. I would be expecting to pay every bit of that 2000$, which, unfortunately, is about 1/3rd of what I already have invested in my car.

My last one cost me around 400.00. 2000.00 is what you would pay for a clutch, been there twice, but with 240000 miles on the clock, can't complain.

Hey erics944 ^ nice to see another Rochester person on here!

Before I started doing my own work, I paid $500 for a belt and WP replacement. Labor only, as I supplied all the parts. (That included a couple other little things like coolant flush & fill.)

#39 where did you have it done? I was thinking about buying the parts and haveing someplace do it.

Second question, where do you take your car to have the state inspection done?

$2000 quote sure makes a $500 P9201 tool sound cheap. Plus you get to sell the P9201 when you sell your car. OUCH!

This place I called is supposed to be the best at what they do. They have been here in St. Louis for over 20 years I think. They mainly deal with Ferraris and Porsches. I was recommended by to goto them by a guy who had his 3rd gear syncro replaced along with some other work done there. Some of you may remember him, Ed Resener, he was on here for a while with a 944 that wouldn't start. I traveled down to his place and worked on it with him a few times. He told me they only ran him a bill of about $600 or so. I figured they would be able to do it all for about 500$. Guess not.

I might have to learn to do this myself!

Hey Schumi, I may be heading to St. Louis in a couple of months to see a friend of mine (Chuck Haines at Can Am Cars). I could always bring my tensioner and other various tools, and I'll help you do all the engine "front-end" work.

My trip isn't a sure thing yet, but I will keep you in the loop.

Let me know,
-Nick

That sounds awesome Nick. I am consdering selling my 924S this summer, I can't really decide but I have a buyer lined up for it as soon as I make the decision to sell. He told me that he would do the belts as soon as he got it so if I do indeed decide to sell I will just pass that burden on to him.

I might be in the market later this summer for a well maintained, recently serviced S2 cab, turbo, or 968... I really can't wait.

I just paid $1500 but that included flushing the brakes and power steering (which wasn't itemized separately). This also included a 500-1000 mile re-tension.

I personally wouldn't have done it myself since I am new to 944's but by the next time, I may tackle it myself. I believe the biggest part of the project is the tensioning which requires a special tool but some guys rent them out (or loan).

Vern
