Fixed a "Funny" sound

My 17 year old son has an '84 944 as a daily driver (yes he is 17 and he earned the right to have this car with his academics, he scored a 35 on the ACT, 2150 on his SAT, the college contacts are pouring in!!). He comes home yesterday and said the car was making a "funny sound", I listened and it was an engine speed related clicking that came and went. Opened the hood and got out my trusty stethoscope and listened around. the sound was coming from the distributor cap area?

Today I took the cap off and found the rotor shaft that is attached to the cam was loose! took everything off and found somebody had mickey moused the screw on the rotor, and the other set screw looked like a cut off machine screw that had a slot filed in it. Finally got it all off and cleaned up with the help of some brake clean, got out the loctite and reassembled with new, proper fasteners and now it is as good as new.

I called the mechanic who maintained the car and he said he remembered the PO had some problems while out of town but his records showed he never worked ion the rotor shaft.

Oh well at least it is repaired correctly now!! Anybody else have this problem or is this just a function of mickey mouse repairs?

2400 is top score from what I know. I AM old... lol... used to be 1600 but they added a thrid section, an esay section or something, to add another possible 800 points.

Nice job on the 2150! Mine might have been higher if there were a Porsche waiting in the wings.

I applaud you for what you have done as a father to teach your son. He is obviously a very bright individual. He can fix problems such as these if he puts his mind to it.

Back on topic now. I fix my own if they don't hold up. I'm a cheap skate. However, I still have all of the cars I've ever owned, and I only bark at myself when they break. I've only 5 though, one is a recent wreck that will be stripped.

Just a note on the test scores, the SAT is 2400 max now with the written essay, The AST composite perfect score is 36. The college recruiters are calling 3-4 times a week and the flood o mail is amazing!
