Brake Pad Reccomendations

I just bought a set (4) of slotted brake rotors for my 1988 n/a. I bought these from 944online.com and they also sold me Metal Master Brake Pads.

I had previously bought a set of Pagid brake pads (I think they are Pagid but they might be Jurid - I'll have to check). The guys at 914online.com told me that they recommend Metal Master because they are softer than the Pagid and the Pagid's are harder on the rotors.

I was just wondering what you guys think. My car is used for street use only. I realize that I don't need slotted rotors but they look good. Unfortunately, they;re not turbo rotors as I don't have the spindle upgrades at this time.....but down the road, I'd like to switch over to the larger setup that's on the turbo.

Thanks.............................Vern

I really like metal masters for my n/a. More pad than I ever needed for street and autocross. I liked them enough to try them on the 951... On track, the 951 made them catch fire so I had to change to kfp magnum golds.

Thanks for the info. I will have to wait a week before my rotors and pads get here but I can't wait.

For the metal masters, are there different brands of "metal masters"? I ordered the metal masters off 944 online, and when i got them i see they are made from PBR... I had always looked at Axxis ones. Anyone know the differance, they both are XBG Semi-met pads.... Should i return these and get the Axxis ones (i was recommended these)?

They are exactly the same. If you order from Paragon products you might get PBR/Axxis/Metal Master. Manufacture is identical, don't sweat it. I have these on my car, cheap, quiet, dusty- did I mention cheap. They work well on the street. Wouldn't bother with Pagid for the street - depending on compound will be expensive and loud, and may eat your rotors. I have Porterfield R4 for the track, great pad, but too loud for the street.

They are kind of dusty, but I have a loop by my house where there are some uninhabited roads and I push the car with near threshold braking at times, it might be different with typical use. You can't really get everything out of one pad, I think a little dust is an ok compromise considering the performance at this price point.

I am using a set of OE brake pads from Porsche. I found them on EBAY for $70. Haven't had the car on the road as yet to give you a report.

the metal master were made by repco (that's how old i am), then it became axiss, now they are pbr - same pad - different company name

those pads are fine for average use, and a good budget pad, but they have cold stop issues, and can tear up drilled rotors - i ran them for years on smaller cars and loved hem, but on anything close to 3000 lbs, i have found them to be a little wanting - they also can be known to squeak occasionally

i am currently using the Porterfiled 4S pad, and in 30 years of playing with pads, this is the best thing i have ever found for performance street use (and the occasional track day) - i have yet to have them fade on my 968, and the dust is manageable (much better than stock) - not a single squeak either

i will be putting them on ALL of my cars - you get what you pay for

Flash - I am tempted to use the Porterfield 4S for the street as well given my positive experience with the R4 at the track, one set costs as much as 3 sets of the PBRs however.
