944 Sunroof Delete?

I've been looking for a 944 and came accross a 1984 WITHOUT a Sunroof... How rare are these? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

they're quite rare. a lot of times racers wil pay good money to replicate this by cutting out the sunroof and having a 924 roof skin welded in.

i've got one. i've seen another locally, and probably know of another 5 i've ever seen. i'd say they're rare, probably rarer than a stick shift 928.

A few 1983 and 1984 944s were imported to the US without sunroofs. Anything after that would have been a special order.

Ooh I feel special now. Except the PO didn't take care of mine at all and I have to wait until I'm out of college to do anything with it

They're rare, but they're not worth anything extra. They're also not any more rigid than the sunroof cars.

There's some debate on whether they are lighter, but even if they are (I think it's likely), it's not much of a difference, maybe a pound or two.

I believe you'll find more of these in Europe too, where cars are generally supplied with very few options as standard, and where the weather doesn't mandate A/C, sunroof, rag top etc..

I've got a 924S without a sunroof. And the 924S is rare, they only made it for two years in the states. So one without a sunroof makes it REALLY rare, right? (ok, I'm really stretching here . .)

84s without sunroofs are more common because it became an option to keep the price down. They are still pretty uncommon. Since the sunroof is so tough to open, I would rather not have it anyway and have the lighter and simpler car.

hard to open?
I can have my roof unlatched and laying in the back seat in less than a minute... *without* even getting out of the car!

How do you do this without getting out of the car? I can get the top off in a matter of seconds but I'm always standing outside the car with the hatch open.

A 924S without a sunroof is actually quite rare. The sunroof was a standard option on the 924S I believe, so a sunroof-delete was a special order option. "sonderwunsch"....

You loose a few pounds because there is no sunroof motor in the rear, no cable, and no cable latches and gearboxes. But it isn't more than 7-8 lbs all total I would not think.

And yes the word on the street is that the sunroof models are actually stiffer than the non-sunroof models because of the bracing around the sunroof opening. But I doubt this is anything but just a technical guess. I doubt if even Porsche themselves would know anymore.

If it isn't installed, it can't go wrong or leak.

I currently have three of the non sunroof cars in my salvage yard. Two are 944 turbos and one is a 924S.

Fairly rare, but not drastically so.
