SunRoof Issues, Am I a Tard??

OK, I know this is a stupid question and a cool guy has been helping me out so far.
OK, My sun Roofs works, no problems, Up and Down, no leaks
I CAN NOT GET THE ROOF TO COME OUT!!!

I can raise the roof and undo the inside locks, but I can not get it off the rear tracks to remove. I can hit the Raise button and Hold it for a long time, and it will justturn, I can hear the gears. I just can not understand why I can not get it to pull out. John has been very explanitory, but I can't get the concept. I can understand rasing the roof, undoing the inside locks, then I should be able to slide the roof towards the rear up and it should pull out, but NO! Its like it is locked still, or I just am not pushing hard enough to get it to come out. Should I hear an unlocking sound for the roof, should it stop when I hit the Raise button? Thanks Again, Mike

Actually put the key to position 1 and when you press down they should unlock the roof.

The roof unlocks when it is closed, not open. Maybe that's what you are missing. If you read the Clark's procedure anf follow it exactly it should work for you. Put the key in the ignition and turn the car to the on position but do not start it. LOWER the roof all the way. This SHOULD "unlock" the roof and the arms should retract back inside the roof. Once this is done unlock the front clips, get out of the car, push the back half up with your hand from the inside so you can pull it off from the outside.

The only thing I can think is that for some reason your car is maybe hitting the unlocked limit switch too soon and not allowing it to unlock.

Wrong.

To remove the roof:

1) Start with the roof completely closed
2) Turn the car off
3) Put the key in the "Acc" position (for pre-'85.5 this is simply inserting the key in the ignition without turning it, and for post-'85.5 cars this is turning the key to the first detent). Do NOT turn the key to the "Run" position.
4) Press the "Open" button for the sunroof (this is the same button that normally causes the roof to be raised. This will retract the lifting arms into the roof and free the rear of the sunroof.
5) Release the front latches

The confusing thing about the roof is that the button is not a "Raise/Lower" button, it's an "Open/Close" button. "Open" will always open the roof. If the car is running or if the ignition is in the "Run" position the "Open" button will lift the roof and the "Close" button will lower the roof. If the car is off and the key is in the "Acc" position, the "Open" button will retract the arms without lifting the roof, and the "Close" button will extend the lifting arms to latch the roof at the rear.

Well I Thank You alot!!! This worked. I kept putting th Key too far and so it would not work. It works good now. Got it apart and one of the hinges on the passengers side was broke. No hopefully it wont rain. Thanks for the help. I listened, the gear did retract and unlocked the front and cam out with ease! Mike

The broken front hinge will not leak. Most of us have one broken higne if not both sides. Good thing for the center hinge!

Not a dumb question at all. When I first bought my car I tried and tried and tried to figure it out. I pushed the lifters in with my fingers but thought I might break the lifters. I thought that the Porsche engineers really screwed this one up......eventually, I read the Clark's article and figured it out. It's definitely not a user friendly setup until you've learned the correct way....as mentioned above.
