Mounting Starter?

From everywhere that I read mounting the starter is as easy as bolting it back on.

I bolt my starter motor back on tighten the two bolts on tightly and the electrical leads and when I turn the key I can hear the starter turning but the engine doesn't turn with the starter.

Is there something dumb that I am not thinking of? The starter appears to be flush with the clutch casing and I have tried mounting it twice.

Its possible the solenoid is not working, so the starter is turning over but the gear is not engaging. Take the starter off (again) and put 12v across the two leads. See if the gear comes out or not.

I tried jiggling the starter gear forward and back and reinstalled it and now it works. If only I had a fully charged battery now.
