Hunting Idle Solved!

It's been about a 6 month project. My idle has been hunting between 900 and 950 rpm. I suspected vacuum leaks so the project began.

First, I replaced almost all of the rubber hoses. Next was the cloth covered hoses that go to the cannister. After that, I replaced the hard plastic vacuum lines. As I did this, I noticed that many of the rubber connectors were loose fitting so I ordered the "U" & "Y" shaped rubber connectors which I replaced last night. I replaced all but one "Y" connector which I set down and couldn't find after searching the garage for an hour.

Today, I noticed that the hunting idle is completely cured. I suspect it was the sensor that is near the idle control valve that has two vacuum ports on it - the connections were very loose.

The last thing to replace is the funky rubber hose that goes the the oil separator and the hoses that go to the idle control valve. However, it looks like I will have to remove the intake manifold to do that - soon but not tonight.

The old rubber connectors:

Any advice on the intake manifold removal would be great............Vern

Vern, do your self a favor and replace the o-ring seals for the Air Oil Seperator (item #16 and #44) especially since it is an easy job when the intake manifold is out of the way.

I'm in the process of replacing the AOS seals and I am finding that all the large hoses under the intake manifold to be in a severe case of dry rot. After doing the AOS seals I am now looking for a deal on all the hoses since they are not cheap.

The manifold was not difficult to remove using the instructions from the Clarks garage web site. The situation that was an eye opener for me was following the instructions to pull up on the fuel injector rails to remove the rail and stuck injectors togeather but instead having the rail come away leaving 2 of the injectors in the manifold and having the remaining gas in the rail leak out all over the top of the enging and collect in some of the recesses on the engine. What was worry some was waking up the 6mm allen head bolts using a punch and a large hammer, my thoughts were of a spark igniting all the gas fumes, next time I would wake up the bolts before pulling the fuel injector rail.

Thanks for the tip. I definately want to have everything I need to replace before I take off the manifold.

Regarding the large weird hose under the manifold. If you are still looking for one, I bought mine at 944online.com I actually ordered this hose at the Porsche dealership in March and to date, it still has not come. So I tried 944online.com and thay had it to me in a few days. Now I just need to go the the dealership and get my money back.

Thanks again........Vern
