Anyone done a Door Handle swap?

Both my door handles decided to stop working for me. A friend had told me that the door handles from the Mk2 Jetta fit our cars perfectly. After some searching on ebay, and comparisons to porsche script handles I decided to buy a pair of the VW handles off ebay.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/VW-Mk2-Jetta-Golf-4-Door-Handle-Black-Mk3-Stylish-RARE_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33642QQihZ017QQite mZ270024782695QQrdZ1

So far the handles fit on the door perfectly, but the mechanism which actually presses the lever to open the door is completely different. I'm in the process of welding some sheet metal to a screw then creating a hinge of my own, however the results have not been great. I'm wondering if anyone has attempted this swap before, or has any ideas as to how it works. I'll try to post some pics explaining the situation further.

Won't work as you have discovered the linkage is totally different. These handles are made from weak material hence all the breakage we suffer. Buy the real handles.

I agree! But being the guy bought VW ones, assuming cost was a factor, I don't think 968 handles are in his budget.

Yeah the VW handles look very similar to the 968 handles when on the car...and the price was very good. I figured I would try it and if it didn't work go back to the porsche ones.

I had a broken linkage on my handle and I just replaced the linkage 944-537-261-02-M100
cheap fix. What else goes wrong with these handles? My other side is sticky and I was going to investigate.

A word of caution on 968 handles. They are very hard to come by. A used set is about $300 including locks. Be sure you get locks because that is where the money is. 944 locks do not fit. 968 locks run about $350 retail each from Porsche. No one sells locks individually. The handle casting is cheap about $70from Sunset imports.

I came across a pair of 968 handles w/o locks. I bought locks from Sunset at $195 each plus shipping. I learned the hard way.

Since we are on the subject, can the latter handles be used on say a '83 944. I found the repair linkage but it said it was for a '86 -'89 handles. can I just throw a latter handle on?
BTW I think Sunset sells the whole 968 door handle kit with locks for ~350 or so I thought.

Phillip,

You might be right on the Sunset kit but these handles are painted, refurbished and ready to be installed on my 83. I thought the locks were interchangable - not. I'm beyond the point of no return. Had I look into this eariler, I would have looked for a used set or purchased a set from Sunset.

An expensive lesson learned.

Phillip,

The handles should work. Do you want my 83 handles??? There is nothing wrong with them other than a cover missing, I believe on the drivers side. I can send you pics if you wish.

I'll take them, drivers side is broken and its getting a little embarrassing having to pretend your opening the passenger side door looking for something and reach over and unlatch.

Heh, I know this all too well. At one point I had both door handles out. The rear hatch would pop open without a key if I wiggled it a little. I had to open the hatch, jump in the back and open the door. That one is a bit harder to pretend you are doing something other than opening the door.

I had the same handles on my Audi 4000cs years back and had the same problems.
