I don't have one, but I thought you were supposed to calibrate it before using it, as it required a different setting for timing belt vs. balance shaft belt.

When the gauge is off the car its supposed to read like that. The dial indicators original use is for machining purposes on lathes. This is why the calculations have you calibrate the tool before taking measurements.

Have you gone to his web site? He has directions and pictures posted. Also I think he has video showing use of the tool.

Go to his site
http://www.arnnworx.com/new_tensioning_tool.htm
read all the instructions a couple times first.
when you do the calculations do it a few times and you'll get the hang of it.

ok i think this thing is ****ed up, im on my last straw, i think its reading backwards, when i pull up on the top puller thingy to snap the guage, it goes forwards, as in 1 2 3 4 5 6, i have it attacthed to my balance belt and i cant tension the ****er cause it doesnt respond when i turn the balance idler. WTF, this is ****ing irritating,

They work. The 920X is for the timing belt only. You don't calibrate it and it won't read zero to start. Your result is from a calculation so it doesn't matter what it reads when assembled and before you install it. Expect to take some time the first time to get used to the tool. There is a bit of a learning curve to crawl up.
Set the belt up eyeball close. Install the tool with the bar under the belt. Read the gauge. Remove the bar. Read the gauge. Do the math. Do everything a couple of times til you get consistent results.
The instructions that come with it are good. Send Bruce an e-mail if you have questions or concerns. He is very good at supporting his products.

Let us know how you make out.

Jon

ok, i believe i got it all to work, did the calcs. 14 times, i have the paper to prove it, took about an hour, i have it all figured out now. However about the quality thing, i only said it was " ok " because the set screw was stripped out when it arrived so i wasnt to happy, a 5 minute run to lowes fixed that. other than this, we shall see if i did everything correctly tomorrow, cause tomorrow i will try to start her for the first time. Thanks Josh

Adrian, i can help you. Let me know a time and date.

And Jon, the new version of the 920x tensions the balance shaft belt as well..a few different attachments were added to make it possible.

If you have the factory tool, there is a calibration bar that should be used to adjust the "tool" to 4.0. The dial should read very close to zero when it is free. You can adjust the dial face to line it up. The outer pointer needle is an indicator of maximum needle travel.

Adjust the dial face so that the needle and zero line up, insert the calibration bar between the two pads, press the sliding bar until the catch engages and then adjust to 4.0 with the screw, pull the release. Keep tweaking until you get repeatable results.
