Cv questions
Do you know if the Cv joint boots are interchangeable?
I went to my local shop (partssource) and asked them to get me some CV boots.. as i have the whole set up including shafts to replace the bad ones in my S2. They only stock a number for the Outer boot, or a kit with the whole inner joint and boot. The outer boot is like 21.00 dollars and the kit with boot for the innter is 210.00 dollars so could i essentially buy 4 outer boots and fit them inner and outer? and is it worth 90 dollars a side/shaft (incl inner and outer) to have the whole thing rebuilt by a shop? then install myself? Or should i attempt this all myself? P.s. The same shop actually makes Performance Clutches for Porsche and ferrari etc. Told them i got a Centreforce for my S model and was not satisfied with it.. he told me about a flaw in the design of centreforce and he said for the same price (500-600 dollars canadian for the disk and pressure plate) he makes really strong performance ones for the 944 and 911, they apparently supply and distribute worldwide ... Just incase anyone was interested..

Here on Pelican they only list a CV boot but it doesnt mention inner or outer. The CV shafts see to be interchangeable inner to outer so I dont think there is a difference.
I dont know what is involved with replacing the boot s or rebuilding them but when I had my clicking CV's I just replaced them with Cardone remaned units from PartsSource. They were just over $300 for the pair when you return your old ones. Install was simple, pack with CV grease then bolt them up. If they are going to charge you $90 labour and $40 a side I would just go with the remaned ones. |

Umm.. its only 90 dollars a side... so one drive shaft from cv to cv is 90 dollars to do. so total is 180 to redo plus boots... i supply the parts..which i already have a good extra set.. they give it back to me to put in..
does that sound reasonable?

are they easy to rebuild your self.. i just have a bunch of pieces and two shafts sitting in ziplocs

Easy, yes. But messy. Make sure you use special grease for CV joints and new triple-square bolts fastened at the proper torque.

Second the mess. Recently purchased a rebuild for no more than $180 US (with $100 core) from Kragen.
You still got to deal with the mess. CVs are just too much fun right? Oh yeah, had to saw out two of those damn 12-point bolts. Just plain nonesense, ordered 12 from Pelican, showed up in 2 days! |

Rebuilding them is easy but you do get very greasy like the others have mentioned. When I did mine I replaced the triplesquare bolts with good old fashioned hex heads. Just my opinion but I hate those darn triplesquares!

sure, $90+ $40 in boots equals $130 to swap old used parts with old used but still good parts. Re manufactured CV's that are inspec and working at 100% with new boots are $195 each (just looked up the receipt) All Im saying is that you might be better off just buying the new units. The choice is yours (obviously)

Why don't you just buy the complete Kragen (partsamerica.com) axles for $67/side and get a lifetime warranty in the process. Why do all that swapping CV's, boots, and getting incredibly greasy when it's so easy installing a complete assembly? I put them on a 944 Spec car and they been through a full season with the new owner.

The problem with hex heads is that they're much easier to round out. That's why Porsche used triple-squares in 10.9 strength.

I cleaned mine out with Simply Green a tooth brush and a small pick. I had no issue removing them and didnt strip any.
