Door lock change

Worked on my drivers side door lock today. The key cylinder and interior knob were non-functional. Removed the door panel and sprayed some WD40... bingo... functioning interior lock but no dice on the key cylinder. I was beginning to suspect that the cylinder had been changed and when I tried the only spare key that came with the car... indeed it had. The ignition key fits the passenger door and the rear hatch. The small spare key fits the drivers door. So from what I've seen in the parts list it is possible to order spare keys and new key cylinders. But to get a cylinder to match an existing key it's asking for a number (and more money). Where is the key number documented? Also, how difficult is it to replace the key cylinder?

Go to the Porsche dealer, give them your VIN and request a key replacement. They will look it up and issue a new key. 2 weeks delivery at the most at a cost around 35 bucks w/o the black cover. Remove the old key from the OE black cover and replace it w/the new key.

Thanks for your response but that doesn't really take care of the mis-matched drivers door and ignition locks. The ultimate solution is a lock cylinder that matches the ignition lock.

I am sorry I misread it. I thought the tumblers were OE, my error.

Check out this Tech Article from the Pelican library. It explains exactly what needs to be done to re-key your locks to make all your locks match one key. It sounds pretty easy. Unfortunately, I don't know where you can purchase the assortment of lock pins needed to do this.....if you have some old locks laying around, you can cannibalize the pins from them. Some people suggest that a good locksmith can do it, but I don't know any around my town that can. Maybe the Porsche dealer? I shudder to think what that might cost, if they can do it. If anyone out there knows a good locksmith that can do this, or where the lock pins can be found for DIY, please post a recommendation.

I'm not familiar with the 924S but if it has the insert style door handles the original key code is stamped on the passenger door side handle. I used to have a photo somewhere. When you pull the finger lever the key code number is exposed on top of the inside part that gets exposed. It should have a code like 'VB4675' You might have to remove the door frame screw at the rear of the handle to tip it out far enough to see it. This assumes that the passenger door handle is original and the ignition tumbler hasn't been changed either.

You seem to know your 924's very well. Does the 924S have the plastic insert type handles or the solid type on the later 944 models? If he can get that key code number he can buy a new cylinder for the drivers door without replacing the handle at all...much cheaper and then the car is keyed alike.

The 924 and early 944 up to 85 used VW handles with a plastic trim strip that snapped on the outer handle. The 85.5+ 944 had solid handles or Porsche script handles with no plastic insert. I'm just not familiar enough with the 924S to know if it used early or late handles. The 924S used early interiors but some later parts like the 944 of the same years.

He needs a tumbler that matches his other locks though. I have 3 early tumblers also but I doubt if it would do him any good without a locksmith and a set of correct pins. It's good to know the later 924S used the early handles, now he can at least get the key code from the passenger side handle and get it matched.

Here's a photo of the passenger door handle. I'm not sure where the code would be located. I didn't see anything on the pull lever from the top or bottom.

I'm pretty sure a locksmith can set the tumblers to match the key...call your local locksmith to see what it costs as I have no idea but I don't think it will be that much.

The number is on the inside. This is a pic of a insert type handle with the finger pull depressed to show the keycode location. It's the same for all insert type passenger side handles.

Thanks 2Tight. That shows me how to proceed. This is a low priority fix anyway. I've got some other items on my project list that I'll tackle first.

Make sure to let us know what you find out. I just took mine to a locksmith and had the doors and ignition matched (all three were different!) I don't think it was very much money and they did it pretty fast.

Good luck!

Will do. Next fix will be the rear lid lift cylinders and a missing inner fender panel.

Yeah, I know a guy that could really use this kind of recommendation!
