Oil Temp Gauge

Just a bit of griping here...

Anyone else a bit disappointed that Porsche chose to give us a voltmeter instead of an oil temp gauge? (At least that's the way it is on my S2... do the turbo models have an oil temp gauge?)

Naturally, I'd love to have both (in addition to the oil pressure gauge), but if I had a choice, I'd rather have the oil temp gauge instead of the voltmeter.

IMHO, knowing the oil temp is much more important than knowing the voltage. I usually don't like to run the car hard until the oil temp has reached operating temperature. As well, knowing the oil temp is especially critical when on the race track.

Bummer...

I suppose I could always fit an aftermarket VDO unit. Has anyone ever installed one in their 944?

Jim

it is somewhat disapointing, but then again, they added an oil pressure gauge almost as an afterthought to the 914 (unless you had the center console, you just had a warning light).

I really don't know, or at least I have never seen a replacement sending unit that would also drive a temp gauge.

An oil temp gauge is obviously more important in something like a 911/914, but I too have thought of putting one in my turbo. For the same reason as Jim stated.

I'd put mine in a A-pillar pod, along with a A-F meter. Already have a VDO boost gauge in the console. Or maybe i'd switch em around, I think its a critical thing to have though.

The most popular spot is the drain plug.

I dont remember the thread and pitch of the drain plug, goto the local autoplace and match it up. Take the plug to a machine shop and have them drill and tap a hole for the thread of the temp sensor. Usually its a NPT. You can do it yourself if you have a vice and are steady with a drill.

I use my oil pressure gauge to know when the oil is hot.

I know that it will stay pegged at 5 at idle when the oil is cold, but when it will drop to 3 at idle, I'm ready for action...

i bought the oil temp gague a year ago and hate to waste it. FAZE unit and i would like to adapt its sensor to go into my 944 somewhere. i found adaptors on ebay, they are 14mm and 16mm and I think the 944 is larger than that?

Just drill and tap a drain plug.

Oil temp is important especially on track cars running heavy weight oil. Your oil pressure can be fine, but your oil could also be roasting at 250-260*F. Time to ease up and let the oil cool off. Oil pressure only tells part of the story.
