Ring Intallation Help Request
Anyone happen to know of a site documenting how to do this. OK, it seems easy enough but all these diagrams on the Goetze ring package with no words is confusing. The compression rings are marked "Top" so at least I know that much. Does the gap have to be oriented any particular way (do they have to be staggered)??
As for the oiling ring.. This one isn't marked "Top". For the life of me, I can see no difference between either flat side looking at the cross section. Do these have a top and bottom? Is there some way the outer ring and springy thing inside have to be oriented? Can someone who's installed Goetz rings fill me in and decipher the diagrams? Sorry...I swear I'm not dumb. You'll have to take my word on that though. -C |

The gap between the 2 compression rings is usually 180 degrees out from each other. ie upper ring gap faces left, lower ring gap faces right
The oil ring doesn't have any real orientation. This info comes from building other engines however I don't see why there would be any real time difference.

^+1 although I put the oil rings opposite as well. It's also very important to check the ring gap and adjust as necessary on this engine.

Anyone know the ring gap (are there different ones for each tolerance group)??
We need a rebuilding forum like the 911 guys. |

What year, what engine?
Help us to help you by putting your car's year and model in your signature line. There are many threads on here of people rebuilding engines. You can do a search and find a lot of great information.

Manual states .20 - .45 mm for end gap. That is of course for the 8v motor.
There's no difference between brands of pistons or overbored cyls.

Thank you sir. This is for the 8V 951 motor. Went to buy a feeler gauge today and I was stuck...had no idea what range I needed.
