Clutch replacement - Who has done it

If you have replaced your clutch where did you get the kit from? How happy have you been with it. Estimate on the cost of just the parts?

Also did you replace the pilot bearing & resurface the flywheel & replace the pilot bearing?

I replaced the clutch in my son's and my 86 944 NA project car over the fall. I actually got lucky and got a brand new clutch, pressure plate, and throwout bearing off craigslist for $200. I also replaced the pilot bearing, clutch fork bearings, reference sensors, all water hoses, oil pressure sender unit, DME temp sensor, O2 sensor, all belts, and a bunch of other crap at the same time. I did not resurface the flywheel.

I can't say how happy we are with it since we're not driving the car yet. Its been undergoing a half decent refurbishing and we're getting ready to paint it as soon as the weather breaks.

Cost is highly dependent on where you buy and resourcefulness. For instance, I believe there is a used clutch and pressure plate (6 months old, IIRC) for sale on this site for $75. If you're tight on cash, I'd give it a look. I would have bought it if I'd seen it when doing the work on our car.

I've had good luck getting parts from ebay for some of the best prices I've seen. If you're not familiar with ebay, its not just individuals selling used stuff but also businesses selling their normal inventory.

I saw that one last week, but it looked a lot older then 6 months. I dont mind spending the money. Just seems like there are some big differences in prices between Pelican, Paragon & 944online. I've found one on ebay that I will most likely end up buying. Just want to hear some opinions from what others have spent.

I'm already doing a bunch of other crap at the same time so this will be the last thing I need to get her up and running.

It kind of burns me that parts, especially clutch, are so expensive for this car. I've seen new 911 clutch advertised fro $49, but 944 is $350+. I've wanted to simply take a 944 clutch disk to a friendly foreign part warehouse and see if I could match it up with a VW , Audi, BMW, or other Porsche clutch. It might not be ENGINEERED for the 944 but it would probably work for a daily driver. I just don't have that connection into a parts warehouse. Can you imagine the uproar over a $40 944 clutch?

If you replaced the rear crank seal, have the PP/TO and flywheel professionally balanced or you will feel vibration at 3000 to 3200 rpm.
Replace all bearings, the TO slide and the fork shaft. Look at the fork for wear where the TO pivots. Some have worn so bad that the fork need replacing.
The flywheel bolts stretch and should/must be replaced. The PP bolts can be reused if you wish.
Once completed you will probably need new motor mounts. I became very sensitive to all sounds and vibrations.

My cost? $800-$1000. Parts, shop fees, bandages, pain killer...

dealing with speed and reference sensors = priceless Some things money can't buy, but for everything else there is beer.

Parts was $400 from Vertex about 6 years ago (before I found Pelican)
Clutch works great.
