heater help - no heat - the control valve?

My heater does not blow any hot air on this early 83 - 944. Could this be the heater control valve stuck closed? What are the steps to take to fix this problem & where is this part located? Thanks.

Check to see if the vacuum line is still connected on the heater control valve. It is located inbetween the intake manifold and firewall.

The heater control valve is a small, (3" diameter) plastic housing located between the back of the head, and the firewall. There are usually several legs of the wiring harness running over this area, so you may have to pull them out of the way to see. It is very hard to work on, because the location is so tight.

There is a cable, (like the ones on bicycle brakes) that runs between the valve, and the heater control levers in the console. The levers on the console should just pull out of the face plate, and then you can remove the screws holding the face plate.

There are several things that can go wrong:
- cable has broke
- or come loose from the lever
- or the tabs holding the cable housing are loose
- or the internal valve has broke

good luck
JM

Also, check the coolant level of the car. If the coolant is really low there won't be enough coolant to run through the heater to warm the air. I know this from first hand experience, hence the 88 engine in my 85 944. Coolant level is an easy check and can also save you a lot of time and money replacing the engine.

Or the heater control valve.
