Return to idle

What controls the 84 944's return to idle? My car, when I depress the clutch to slow down or change gears, dips down to 400-600 RPMs before retuning to 1000, and it has done this consistently over the years...

Is there a specific part or spring that controls this, or is it an adjustment?

Thanks, Ralph

Mine does the same thing and have already asked this question. The answer I got was that it is the DME. I was told that someone used to make a chip for your DME that will correct this. I have looked for one but have not been able to find one.

On the early cars I thought it was two things... one being DME programming, and the other being the idle stabilizer valve (located conveniently under the intake manifold). If it gums up the idle may dip too low and come back. If you see any residue in the rubber intake boot it might not be a bad idea to take the valve out, clean it up a little by squirting in some cleaner and actuating the thing with a 9V battery. With a good battery you should see the part inside move back and forth. The good news is that it's easy to pull the intake manifold, and new gaskets will run you $5 from this site.

Return to idle

I recently replaced the Auxilliary Air Valve while replacing the head gasket, so that probably isn't contributing to this problem.

What about one of the springs or perhaps the TPS?

he makes the chip for early 944, but you have to install it with an adapter board
or a BMW DME transplant

Return To Idle

Wow, the site looks promising... I've emailed him a question and anxiously await a reply.

This is very exciting, I've lived with this problem since the car was new, if I can change that it will be a whole new driving experience.

Thanks for the reply... Ralph

Return To Idle

Does anyone have any experience with the developer of the chip to eliminate the 944's return to idle shudder? http://www.frwilk.com/

apparently best $200 you can spend on an early car.

I have the Promax Chip and it is much better than stock, but cannot tell you abour FRwilk's chip from personal experience.

do a search on clarks garage forum or that other forum that we are not suppose to talk about.
