strange tick-over

I had an unusual thing happen today, sitting at a junction on tick-over, the revs started to rise and fall between 800 and 1200 for some seconds, thought it would stall but it didn't, a little while before this I did notice a slight degree of hesitation when applying the throttle, but it then cleared. Not sure if there is a link. The engine was warm. It is now running normal. Any clues as to what's going on please?

Do you have a spare DME relay in the glovebox? Maybe it's warning you. Could also be a lot of other things like idle control valve or possibly a vacuum leak really hard to tell when it doesn't do it all the time and you can't trace it down. I hate those intermittent problems.

Thanks Tom, Think I need to get this relay as a safeguard, have made a note of all your pointers and agree intermittent is a pain, you're always waiting for the next time!

What do you mean by "tick-over"?

Sometimes the translation between European English and American English can be confusing - do you mean the car was idling?

Respectfully........Vern
