Inner fender cover
I was cleaning in the front wheel wells of my '88 924S and noticed that the drivers side has a cover inside the wheel well, to the front, behind the front bumper. The passenger side does not have the same cover on my car but there appears to be holes for the speed nuts in the same positions as the drivers side. When I look at the parts diagram it shows the fender (wing) of the drivers side and the cover (part #OEM-94450332100) but doesn't really list an second number for the passenger side. Can anyone tell me if this cover should be on the passenger side also?
Thanks. |

Upon more in-depth research I've discovered that the passenger side does not have the cover that the drivers side does. This is really odd that Porsche would not protect the inner fender on one side of the 924S. A specialist at Pelican recommended that I fabricate one from sheet metal. Anyone here have experience doing so?

If Porsche didn't do it, there must be a reason for it, no?

One would think that if Porsche didn't put the cover on the passenger side there was a reason. It's just very curious that the screw holes and tabs are in place. The net result is that water and mud gets thrown forward into the fender, sloshes out between the fender and the bumper. Pretty unsightly really.

924S Passenger side inner fender cover mod
I got motivated this weekend and fabricated my own cover for the passenger side fender. Materials needed... (1) piece sheet metal, (1) right angle bracket, (4) speed nuts with screws and washers, (1) 18" length of small vacuum hose, one tube of silicon sealant.
First - Install the right angle bracket on the upper mount position. ![]() Second - Cut a piece of card board to fit neatly as a template. ![]() Third - Outline the template on the sheet metal. Cut the sheet metal and trim to fit. Cut the small vacuum hose to length and split one side. This will be the seal against the fender. Apply RTV sealant along the edge of the sheet metal and then slide the split hose over. Measure mounting holes and bracket in wheel wheel and drill holes in the sheet metal cover for the screws. ![]() Fourth - You'll need the speed nuts for the mounts in the fender wheel (apply a drop of RTV to keep them in place). Paint both sides of the cover before installing. ![]() Presto! You've sealed an area that Porsche neglected on this model.

Gon fix it with me hammer

don't want to diss your work
but i doubt this will be as effective since the main spray comes from the back of the wheel, goes up, and then down and your setup, seems set to keep spray if driving backwards so unless you build a inner liner, that starts in the back, and stops in the front, you'll still have mud flying in there, to and from above

On my '88 944, there are fender covers on both sides. The 944 style covers the entire inside of the wheel well vs. yours which only covers the rear section. Probably, Porsche tried this on the 924 and then added to both sides and the entire inside well on the 944's.
I suspect the reason this is on the driver side of your car is to protect the charcoal cannister (at least that's where my cannister is on the 944). Also, the bolt holes that you show in your pictures are probably there becasue Porsche used the same mold for that particular part of the car. I see no reason why you couldn't add your homemade cover to the passenger side. Porsche made a lot of improvements over the years and this is probably just one of them that started out on one side only - cost was probably an issue too. All new Porsches (i.e., 911's, boxters, etc) have massive amounts of coverings including the entire belly of the car. Lastly, when looking in the parts catalogs, Porsche usually ends the part number with 00 or 01 to indicate left vs. right. You might try this and I will check my pet catalog when I get home (it's more comprehensive than the Pelican parts lookup). Vern |

Reply to Lonneybin - Yes, there is a cover on the drivers side. It is on the front of the wheel well though. Protects the side marker, keep water and mud from being thrown forward. The rear of the wheel well does not have a cover (same as passenger side). You can easily get to the charcoal canister. If you remove that there easy access to the antenna.
Reply to Tidyboy - Please note above. The modification is to the front of the wheel well. Although there is no rear cover on either side - I've found no problems other than rocks and mud collecting where the body meets the chassis at the bottom of the rear wheel well. Porsche did design a small gap there to let water drain but there is the potential for rust anywhere wet foreign materials collect. Especially true in locations where salt is used on the roads. Thanks for your comments gents.

Got it.
I checked my PET catalog and it lists only the driver side. That being said, I would agree with Looneybin, that this is probably to protect the snorkel for the air box. If it were to protect the lights, I would think you'd see one on each side. Vern |
