Tell me about auto trans 944
My wife is wanting to sell her SUV and get a commuter car. Must be an Auto and have decent fuel mileage. I have an 87 944 that I drive like I stole it and get near 30mpg.
Tell me about the auto transmissions. Are they decent? Failure prone? Fuel mileage? I would be looking for an 85.5+ car. Dont worry about telling me about problem areas other than the transmission. I have had my 944 for almost 10 years and a 924 before that. I do all my own work and am anal about service and maintenance. Thank you for your input.

Hey Jay,
Mileage will be 25 on it's best days. The transmission does not have an overdrive and therefore the rpms run high. If she will only be driving it on city streets and never need the overdrive, then it's ok. Reliability seems to be ok although when they do lose the seal between the trans and differential, it's a mess to fix but I've only known a couple to do that. Transmission is made by Audi. That's about all I know.

Thanks Razor. Hmmm 25mpg. Not quite good enough for our consideration. But it was a thought. Would have been cool for a 3 Porsche and one Mercedes garage.

Just teach her to drive a manual...she'll love you for it later.

Definately not a good mileage automatic car - I average about 19 to 20 and that's a blend of city/freeway. Of course, I've never driven it in a manner that would promote good mileage.

She drives stick just fine. But in city traffic, why? I even refuse to drive a stick for my daily driver. Fine for my motorcycles and blasting the twisties hard in the Porsches, but not for sitting in traffic.

We have two automatic 944s and they're great! The 944 I had before my manual was also an autobox and that had about 300,000 on the clock - was still going strong till a drunk driver ploughed into it. Never , ever had trouble with their boxes and the kickdown is pretty damn quick too. I'd get around 30 mpg - town and motorway (enthusiastic) use. Of course, our gallons are bigger than your gallons (for some reason).
When you're paying $10 / gallon like we are over in the UK I'll feel some measure of pity for your concern re mpg! ![]()
