Question Can't get Alternator belt off - any ideas?

I am replacing my alternator and cannot get the A/C compressor out of the way far enough to slack the belt off. I have followed the Clark's Garage item by item, but A/C compressor just does not want to move far enough toward the block to slip the belt off.

Can anyone offer any ideas?

TIA

Have you tried removing the turn-buckle tensioner completely? Also, there may be a bolt that keeps the alternator from swiveling easily - this may have to be loosened.

Turnbuckle completely removed. Any idea where the additional bolt is?

It's not like I have not been able to get it to move, but rather have not been able to get it to move enough.

Use a large screwdriver between the belt and the pulley and pry it off.

Garage
Use a dead blow hammer to get the compressor farther over, or just use a hammer and piece of wood as a stand off. The belt should slip right over the pulleys regardless.

if you replacing the aletrnator, then just take the alternator out. That would eb an easy belt removal.

Dead blow hammer worked... Now to figure the right orientation to get it back in... It's a 951 so space is at a premium

I ran into the same problem yesterday.

I used a pair of wire cutters. Simple.

if you're replacing the alternator AND the belt, you can always just cut the belt.

All is done and back in took a mere 6 hours... Correctly I hope... I am seriously doubting my wrenching skills. How in the world did they put these cars together?

Saved the belt - which was in great shape, but had thought about the cutting it route as I do have a spare.

Many thanks to all for their assistance.
