Black Wheels
My cookie cutter rims on my 944 are oxidized and corroded almost beyond repair, I am painting the car soon and i want to get the rims decent looking, I'm thinking I might try painting the wheels gloss black, Maybe sand blast the outside ring and just scuff up the inside black and paint it all gloss black. Does anyone have or know of any pictures of gloss jet black cookie cutter rims so i know what it looks like before i paint them?

i wouldn't sandblast.. it'd cause pitting of your wheels...
i would get some good old fashioned wet sandpaper and plan an afternoon for it..

When I painted my wheels (silver), I used aircraft stripper - that worked well and the paint peeled right off. It took several applications but it worked very well.

sandblasting + aluminum wheel = trouble

the stripper works well for the paint... but it doesn't help oxodized aluminum on the edges...

I had a thread WAAAAY back when (2003 or 04) in which I gave a detailed description of a wheel refinishing process I performed on the cookie cutters I had on my 83 944. The before-and-after pictures were incredible.

i found a 928s on craigs list. Red with dark tint. Had black phone dials. it looked bad ass. i will see if i can find it again. it may have been NJ or FL or something. i think i saw a 944 as well. im thinking of doing the same.

Actually, the stripper works quite well on the oxodized alluminum/corrosion.

I can't find the "before" pics, but my cookie cutter rims on my old 944 were pitted and coroded all along the outside rim.
I taped off the black paint, and went to town on the wheels (off the car, obviously) with aircraft stripper, a brillo pad, some fine sandpaper for really bad spots, and lots of gloves (you really, really don't want to get the aircraft stripper on your skin). Here is an "after" pic: ![]()
