i think this may be a stupid question. 1988 944 feels like bad U joints.... I may be mistaken, but i dont think these have u joints do they? if not, what is going out.

CV joints, torque tube bearings, wheel bearings, tires out of balance?
When's the last time you checked the tranny fluid?

This un-purchased car is getting expensive!

Why do you think its like U-joints? what is it doing / sounding like?

CV joints (normally click when turning)
torque tube bearings (hum, maybe vibrate. may change with speed/rpm)
wheel bearings (hum that changes when turning, even a little)
tires out of balance (vibrate, wear pattern odd)

well... it sounds like on any other car, a U joint. let off the gas and pop like a U joint going out would do

Well. quick guess would be...
CV joint - motor/trans mount - suspension bushing

just a guess though

I know exactly what you're talkin about, it's the rubber centered clutch gettin ready to go out. It's an expensive pain in the A**. To do it yourself you can get by with about 350 bucks or so just for the basics, but it's kinda one of those "while you're in there" jobs that can get pricey. to have someone do it i would wager would cost alot. But i just got through with this game. It could be your CV's but odds are it's that darn clutch. I put new CV's on mine to try to fix it among other things but eventually the clutch went out...and when they go, they do, you're stuck . So if you're a good mechanic I'd say pay as little as you can and plan on working alot...other wise....get a more expensive one that's had alot of the big jobs done (oil cooler o-rings, spring centered clutch, waterpump, belts and rollers). Good luck!

Don't before you get a thorough Pre-Purchase inspection by somebody who knows the 944 well.

Either that, or assume the worst, and keep lots of cash on hand to bring the car back where it needs to be.

Sounds like it may be the clutch about to let go. Lotsa labor to change it. You need a big toolbox, or a big checkbook. Your choice.

I'm thinking you would be better off getting your other one up to snuff before buying another one that is already sounding like it needs much more work then yours does.

Time for a PPI. People on this forum can guess at a car you don't even own's issues all day long but it won't do a lick of good.

Ha ha.

It actually works out for everyone. You get a way to spend your time working on the car. The forum members get to make wild-ass-guesses about the next problem. And, George gets to sell you parts. It's a win-win-win.

All good info guys. if i get the 88, it really just needs a cluch (maybe), wheel bearings, and a few other small issues.... maybe...$1000. has new paint. alot of the things that work, dont work on my 84. my 84 needs breaks, rotors, rack/pinion, struts, shocks, A/C, fix oil leak, all new interior, body work, paint, and on and on. if i put $3k into it... i would have a $2k car.
This is also my daily driver. To bump up a few years would be nice. the 88 is far cleaner inside and out. if im going to pump money into a car i would rather pump it into the 88. i think it would go further. and.... the 88 is fricken fast for a 4 cylinder!

May have found the problem on the cluch "clinking and clanking". Had my oil changed today. the guy who drove it in to the bay thought the cluch may have had air in the lines (or whatever) and went to bleed it. he said the valve looked like it would have broke off if they tried, so they decided not to. can the valve just be replaced, or should i just go all the way with another slave unit. i hadnt seen it yet. its still in the shop getting a/c conversion, whell bearing and break adjustments.

If you can find one then I dont see why you couldn't just replace it. If it were me though I would get a new slave. Worth the few extra $ to get one that's new & with a warranty.
