Remove Crank pulley to replace cam belt??
A quick first time belt changer (89NA) question:
Is it necessary to remove the crank pulley and its mega-bolt in order to change the cam belt. I got the balance belt off ok but it looks like there is very limited clearance to get the cam belt off as it is kind of recessed into the rear cover. Any tricks to getting this done without removing the crank pulley? Thanks |

I just did the belts on my 89 Turbo, and there was no need to remove the crank pulley. The clearance is tight, but the belt managed to sneak through on my car.
Good luck! |

Not required to replace cam belt. Hold belt in a "U" shape under pully and it will slide in. Shift the belt a bit to "feel" belt in in crank tightly. More at www.clarks-garage.com.
If you plan to use the spring tensioner and your "feel", loosen up pivot and lock nut on tensioner and move spring tensioner pull back and forth to "loosen up" before last pressure adjustment. Easy. John_AZ |

Just be careful not to damage the belt, as it can be a tight fit, but it will work.

Thanks for the replies. I will give it a try.
Another question- do you guys remove the spring tensioner to route the cam belt? I have the 920X tool and decided to get some practice with it. I retensioned the cam belt OK, however the balance belt seems like it is very loose when adjusted according to the directions. It has almost 3/4" deflection or (180 deg twist) on the longest span with the guide roller out. How loose is too loose? seems like it will flap around quite a bit... It did not seem to be quite this loose when I took it apart but it was whining some. Thanks |

The tensioner can stay on the engine when you change the belt. The balance shaft belts are run really loose by feel. If it was whining, chances are it was not properly tensioned and was too tight.

+1 ^ above.
I have the 920X also and think the same thing about the balance belt being too loose. I tried setting it a little tighter than recommended by the 920x instructions but it whined all of the time. Even with it set to the 920X instructed tension, mine will whine when cold but once it warms up the whining stops. I have also read that if you set the clearance between the balance belt idler roller and the belt on the bottom balance shaft to less than the required 0.5 mm, it will also whine. A.J.
