How to do a chassis lube...
Ok, so this is probably a really stupid question, and I accept full criticism for it. Since I'm doing my own oil changes, and my car has been sitting for six months I figure I should do a chassis lube. But I don't know what I'm supposed to do. Does anyone have a good write up or can just explain where I lube, what lube do I use, etc.. I just hope I can have my car rolling nice once I get it fired up again. Thanks!
And I can't wait for the jokes to start rolling in. |

Usually, a chasis lube involves greasing the ball joints. However, the 944 (at least my '88) does not have the type of ball joints that have the grease fittings and are completely sealed.
Since you are changing the oil, I would reccomend an inspection of the chassis components and just make sure that none of the rubber covers on the ball joints are ripped. The same would go for the cv joints in the rear. You might also check the fluid level in the transmission and completely drain & re-fill every couple of years. Lastly, the wheel bearings also take grease and can dry out if your car has been sitting. I doubt 6-months will be a problem but as long as you have the car jacked up, try an wiggle the wheels from top to bottom - you don't want any movement. Try www.clarksgarage.com for other basic maintenance tips and procedures. Vern |
