HELP, Keep Failing Emissions Test (NJ)

Hi All,

I have a 1986 951. I have been through emissions three times now with no luck.

The first time, it sat in a long line for an hour, failed the test and I figured it was just because of the long idle time, so I poured some CRC "guaranteed to pass" into the fuel tank, followed the instructions on the bottle, and went back through where I failed again.

The second time, I had come to terms with the fact that it wasn't a coincidence, so I replaced the O2 valve- the car has 113,000 on it and it looked like it might still be the original O2 valve. No luck, I just failed for the third time.

The guys at Advance Auto Parts and some other local mechanic type people have reccomended a product called Sea Foam which I'm gonna try, but I would like to tap the knowledge base here and see if anyone has any ideas. The car is failing on HC and CO%, here is the breakdown from the latest test.

GAS STANDARD READING
NOx 1273 938
HC 167 311
CO% 0.94 4.33

I'm scratching my head here, what other sensors and valves can I replace to get this thing through? Alternatively . . . does anyone know of a good 'ol fashioned dishonest private inspection station in Southern NJ?

Thanks for the help guys.

those NOx numbers seem high. you have vacuums leaks, at least. very common with the turbos.

Hi. Check my website www.budsave.myffi.biz . I have been using this product on all off my car and I have been using Regular gas instead off Super.
That is already saving for me just on the fill up. Beside I get a better gas mileage from it. And also give me more Horse power on the engine.
I live in Florida, we don't have emissions test.
It have been proven as well in California people using this product, the car pass after having test and fail the emission.
I even use it on my riding mower and able to cut my grass twice with a full off tank, and before using this product I used up 3/4 off a tank just to cut my grass ( I have a big yard).
Good Luck

With high CO and HC you are almost assuredly running rich. Running rich for extended periods will also ruin your cat converter and your NOx will be out of range also when that happens. Try checking the vacuum line to your Fuel Pressure Regulator for raw gas, If you find any, replace the FPR. Also, try a fuel pressure leak down test to see if your injectors are closing correctly. If the injectors are leaking instead of completely closing you will run rich.
Open your hood at night with the engine running and inspect the entire length of the spark plug wires for little sparks jumping around. If you see any, replace the plug wires. Gun the engine a few time to try and induce sparking. Check the condition of your cap, rotor, and spark plugs. There are probably other causes as well that I am not familiar with.

Do the easy thing first. Replace the vacuum lines or check for leaks/disconnected ones. Lindsey has a great kit and it's cheap.

That's most likely the reason your NOx being high.
