Need help finding new exhaust system
I'm looking for a whole new exhaust for my 87 944 N/A. I don't really need anything to fancy just wondering whats the best way to go about getting one.

My kid installed a Lindsey Racing 3" catless exhaust on his car (a 951). For the whole thing, (which connected at the down-pipe and included a Magnaflow muffler and tip) he paid $606.
It was relatively easy to install. And it sounds great. They have a 3" exhaust for the 944 NA that costs somewhat less, depending on what options you get. http://www.lindseyracing.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=LR&Category_Co de=944EXHAUSTMILD |
The exhaust systems were stainless steel and hold up well. If you do not live in a "rust belt" state you might look into a used exhaust from a local yard to save shipping or look into an internet used supplier like:
http://dcauto.gotdns.com/section/index/3585451/202. Pelican also has a "classified parts for sale" forum. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-924-944-968-used-parts-sale-wanted/ Good luck John_AZ 1988 924S + 1987 924S |
Go with The Pelican.

If I get the one from LR do i have to get the MSDS headers, or does it come with stock? Also if i get it with a catalytic converter does it come prewelded so i wouldn't have to take it to a shop?
|
I'd check out automotion too. You can get a bursch headers and exhaust for a little over 600. downside is the cat is 500. I'm looking myself and will probably get the exhaust there, pick up a cheaper cat somewhere, and take it somewhere to get welded on. I've seen magnaflow cat's on ebay for around 60.

I was almost positive the exhaust systems on these cars were NOT stainless, the reason being my exhaust has a very small crack and to check if a local guy could weld it for me i held a magnet up underneath there...it stuck...not stainless steel. |
uh, magnets stick to stainless steel. from http://www.azom.com/details.asp?ArticleID=1140
Stainless Steel - Magnetic Properties All stainless steels, with the exception of the austenitic group, are strongly attracted to a magnet. were you thinking of aluminum? |
Still got the original on my 83. It is stainless and yes some grades of stainless do have a slight magnetic attraction.

In comparison to the others, it's relatively inexpensive. And you'll likely see at least a little HP gain (mostly from ditching the cat). If you do get the cat, I'm assuming it would fit together like the rest of the LR pipes - they use compression fittings. But you might ask them to be sure. It was relatively easy to install. The only problems we had were that the hanger brackets were a little off. Fortunately, the hangers are adjustable (just loosen them and slide them forward or backwards on the torque tube). It ended up really great. Below - his stock exhaust and the new LR 3" side by side. http://www.mikepellegrini.com/Graphics/DSCF3943.JPG |

In the past I have bought a whole exhaust system from the manifold back from a fellow Pelican member for $60. I just posted a WTB add in the parts classified section.

3" is serious overkill for an N/A.
When ever I get a chance, I plan to modify the stock cat-back section from my 951, and bolt it to the 944. It's around 2.5", and shouldn't be too much for the '83. |
Will the MSDS headers fit ok on my car?
|
I'd suggest finding a good used stock exhaust system, making a test pipe with a catalytic converter to swap in for passing emissions, mating it with some good headers (MSDS or Bursch), and splicing on a good sounding muffler.
I wouldn't want to go 3", since I've heard these engines don't do so well with a really big exhaust, unless maybe they are specificly set up and tuned to run well at high rpms with a nice open exhaust. |

Higher grade stainless is non magnetic. |
