alternator fan

My fan on my alternator won't come off. Its one for an early 044's or 924S. The fan covers the front of the slternator. I tried to wedge a screw drive to stop the fan from spinning when I try to loosen the nut, but I broke a blade. Any suggestion?

Shouldn't it be spinning all the time since it's driven by the belt.

Yeah, but I need the fan from it. When you buy a new alternator, they dont include a fan with it, they say to take it from the dead alternator. Yeah the fan is supposed to spin all the time, but that makes it a bithc when you try and get the fan off.

Ok, now I see what you mean. Best thing to do to get it off is to put the pully in a vice and get it off that way. Wont spin on you then.

But since you broke one of the fans you might want to put a post in the for sale section looking for one.

Neighbor wasn't home to use his vice, but I finally got it. I broke a blade, but I looked inside the alternator and, inside looks like a CupII wheel ,5 spoke ya know ,haha, so I stuck a fat flathead screwwdriver in there the make the fan stop spinning. Still couldn't get the nut off, so I put it on the ground and stomped on it a few times and broke it free, in the mean time breaking my big 15'' socket wrench-dam! But I got it off, but its not running yet, tried to jump the car, and the battery is still standing at 11.8DCVs. Going to Auto zone to see if they can charge it, if not, it's 2 months old I'll try and return it to PepBoys. Cheers!
