Ok guys, i have cleaned every ground on the car, i sos'd each eyelet until it was sparkly silver, and i also scrubbed its contact clean to. Shot some electrical solvent to keep things dry and tightened it back up with some light loktite.
starts a little faster believe it or not, about 3rd crank and vroom, and my gauges don't fluctuate as much. I haven't touched my reference sensors yet because i didn't want to break them, so i put some plastic restorer on the connectors and plan to wait a few days for stuff to loosen up. I'm finally starting to learn some patience thanks to these Porsches! Ill put in some new spark plugs tomorrow before work, probably Bosch copper, or NGK, based on what I've read. Ill place an order for Beru ignition wires and OEM cap and rotor to finish it off next week. We shall see if that makes any additional difference to its starting after i clean the sensors. Josh |
A good battery always does wonders.
My car only gets driven once every few weeks. I usually can uncover it, get in, twist the key, and the engine fires up before the engine gets around twice. I always found the face that a 30 year old Bosch injection system is able to do that. Far better than my carbureted 89 Toyota which requires to old pump and crank... |
The biggest difference that I made on my car with respect to starting (as well as other misc. electrical abnormalities) was to replace the battery cables. I had a lot of corrosion on the positive terminal and when I went to clean the wire I stripped it back maybe an inch to get some clean copper, it was green there also. I got some 2ga GM cables and replaced the positive and negative. The old ones are in a sleeve and I would up just cutting them off w/ a hacksaw blade and running the new one to the starter directly then tie wrapping it down. It made an immediate difference, cranking RPM almost doubled with the same battery, starting was much quicker. Installing a relay controlled light harness also made a huge difference, even with the old stock sealed beams. The light was much whiter. I have since gone to 85/100 H4s and it is amazing.

Very nice pictures. It seems what you are doing but did you cover the clamps and battery poles with vaseline or dielectric grease. If so there will be no corrosion there any more. Again, very nice fitting. SmileWavy

Thanks, I did grease them up w/ dielectric. One other thing I did that I definately do not regret is that when I took the battery out I totally cleand the battery area and wiped it down w/ lacquer thinner. I got a quart of that Rhino liner stuff for pickup beds and painted 4 thick coats. It works really well as a battery box liner. I taped everything off and it came out pretty good cosmetically.

I easily removed the gunk that builds up under the battery area with this great chemical called Xylol Xylene. It's basically every cancer causing ketone you can think of in a can. Takes off any nasty grime/grease/corrosion with ease. Also paint if you rub too hard :)

Can you smoke it?

would you want to?

probably not
