Want my 944 to start up faster
 

This just bugs me, i have to crank my 87 n/a 4 times. It starts promptly after 4 times every time but i want 1st or 2nd crank like my old 944. What causes this? thanks Josh

Replace your crank sensors.

thats it? crank and reference sensors are easy, you sure that will speed it up? thanks, Josh

Check valve at fuel pump?

My cars have always taken 2-3 cranks before starting. Basic reason I've read:

The fuel pump in all 944's will only run when the fuel injection computer (DME) gets a speed signal from the engine speed sensor on the back of the flywheel. In other words, the engine must be spinning before the fuel pump is turned on. This is one of the reasons that these cars usually require 2-3 seconds of cranking to start. credit jpk Rennlist.

Before you replace the sensors, clean the connection carefully at the back/top firewall.

If it takes longer, you may have starter issues. Buy a new/rebuilt starter or DIY.

I agree with the fuel check valve. Just clean it out.
The problem could also be the FPR or fuel damper.

personally? i loved the fact that my 944 started up after the 3rd or 4th crank, after one turn of the key.. made the car sound 'older' and just, to me, gave it a little more appeal..

i think its a porsche, and on that note, its a modern sports car, i love it when i turn the key and i have a instant steady idle. When the motor has to crank 3 or 4 times it makes it look tired, and i feel like a poor porsche owner.

My bet is on the fuel pressure regulator/damper.

I changed the damper when the diaphragm failed, and all of a sudden my car took a while to crank up. Replaced the FPR and it went back to starting on the first try.

my car started right up after one crank after cleaning my grounds/battery terminals, and replacing the battery.

Suggestions
 

1) Test the Battery for CCA
2) clean the starter and batt connectons
3) check speed and ref sensor connections and check gap (0.8 mm per Clarks)
4) check sensors per Clarks.

Mine kicks over on 1 to 2 revs.

Have you tried starter fluid down the intake? If it were a fuel delivery problem, it should fire right up. If it were a speed/reference sensor problem, there'd be no difference dumping ether down the intake.

Is it worse starting when car is warm (hot start)?
If so I'd look at FPR (was for me). Check fuel pressure and fuel pressure leakdown.

nope, its exactly the same no matter what temp it is. Its my daily driver, i will run 30 miles, then shut the car off for 5 minutes and go again. I probably start the car 15-20 times everyday, cause im a night owl too. always 4 cranks, ive got today off so im going at all the grounds, and wires. carefully of course.

Ok. I'd still measure the fuel pressure and fuel pressure leakdown, just to know.

I just replaced my crank sensors, went from 3 cranks to starting immediately. I did also regap them, I may have been a hair off.

Car wont start all the time
 

I have a 1989 porsche 944 recently i have been having problems starting the car, the battery is fully charged and there is a full tank of gas. It all starts when I turn the key, it makes the noise like it going to start i guess they call it cranks, but the car just keeps cranking and the engine does not turn on and in the end i end up with a dead battery from trying to start the car. If anyone has a solution please help I would really appreciate it.

ok, maybe I was lucky....I just cleaned my MAF sensor terminals...soft wire brush and some air...re-plugged it...the car has started 9 days in a row now; morning, noon and night on the first turn of the key. Hey, give it a shot.

WHat should fuel pressure be after sitting over night??/ I noticed that after sitting over night I have 0 fuel pressure, Is this normal or is the check valve bad in my fuel pump??? I havent had any starting issues or performance problems, also no leaks.
