Speedometer and odemeter not working

I have an 87 n/a, the speedo and the odo dont work. Its important i get these working again right away.

What should i do to troubleshoot what is causing this, i know that the odo gear is what causes the odo to stop working. Is there a cable i need to replace or will i need to find another speedometer unit itself. Thanks, Josh

Does the cruise control work? The late cars don't have a cable driven speedometer.

Might be the relay. Swap it out for another if you have one.

Check the speedometer sensor. It's on the transmission, driver side.

maybe it wasn't a relay, but was a fuse. Maybe # 18, it's been 15 years since I pulled that fuse/relay out to keep the car from racking up miles, so my memory is a bit fuzzy.

Hey Josh,

Same thing happened to me last week. Not many posts on this topic. HP has the only lead I found-the sensor above the transmission. I didn't find a fuse/relay dedicated to this. I did pull a few that might overlap, instrument panel, radio...but mine are all good. Also, the part numbers for this sensor are different depending on stick vs auto. Let me know if this is what you find out too. Also, I didn't find ANY info on replacing this sensor. I hope that means it is really easy! Keep us posted. I plan on ordering this part tomorrow-unless someone comes up with something else to rule out first....
