New 1981 924 Turbo owner questions

Hello all; I have owned air cooled 912's,911's for years. Recently for some strange reason I scoped out a old 924 turbo. Very decent car, took for testdrive, and it ran great, pulled very nicely on boost, very surprised really.[I would say,it would give my 911SC recently sold a run for its money] Anyway the timing belt/water pump and all were done recently. Well being that I never had a water cooled P-car,what engine oil would you guys recommend being turbocharged and all??? I use Kendall 20-50 in the air cooled P-cars. Also any quirks, with these cars?? [All P-cars do] I will be trailering it home, just for piece of mind, plus want to service it myself[fluid changes, valve adjustment] Any help always appreciated. Warmest Regards;Chris

I run Mobil1 15w50 in my 931. As long as the timing belt is fresh, and Chevron gas is used, I can't think of any serious quirks. If you are serious about getting it into perfect tune, a CIS pressure tester is a must. Also it is critical to refresh ALL intake rubber (they hate vaccuum leaks) and replace the coolant with the correct phosporous free stuff. I use Zerex GL5.

As for the SC, having tracked alongside one on more than one occassion, a 931 will do more than give it a run.

The Zerex looks like pee. Don't forget to refresh tranny oil as well. . .Redline 90NS.

Welcome to the party - you'll enjoy a well-cared-for car!

No need for the "NS" designation Redline unless yours has an LSD... otherwise regular 75W90 Redline is fine...

+1 on the Mobil 1, and be sure to adhere to warm-up and cool-down times for the turbo, since this one's only oil-cooled, just like the 930. In fact, a lot of the turbo-specific stuff is actually shared from the 930.

Now start saving up for a Carrera GT intercooler and hood scoop...

Oh yeah, and since you're taking off the valve cover, you may want to consider replacing head bolts with studs if you ever intend to increase your boost.

Studs are ARP # 251-4701.

LSD additives are usually used to help the LSD slip around tight corners, to minimize "chatter" on the street. Which cuts down on the effectiveness of the diff when you want it.

The NS, as it does not have those additives, you're correct, will make the diff run much tighter, put down more power, but more likely to chatter on the street.

If you have no LSD, rather an open diff, then it doesn't matter which one you put in, there's no clutch plates for the additives (or lack thereof) to work on.

The non-NS is more typically stocked by local places, that I've seen, so if you happen upon a local supplier vs. having to order it online, I wanted to make clear that it's perfectly OK to use that in a trans with an open diff - doesn't really matter either way unless you have an LSD.

If you have an LSD, I wanted to clarify the desire for selecting one or the other.
