Rampant Rumors
Hey folks. As you may or may not know. I resurrected my P car and drove it out from CA to TX. Even without the aid of a speedometer I was impressed with the highway performance.
FYI if you are after the best mileage, stick just under 3K or so, I have been told that that is about 65 mph. I managed a fairly decent 26 mpg or so over the first 2K miles. I opened her up just over the border into Texas with a red lexus riding point and a black mustang following. If someone would be kind enough to tell me what 5800 rpm in 5th equates to, I could tell you about how fast we were all going. As for the mileage...that tended to drop down a bit over this stretch of road (funny that). Anyhow, here I am in Texas hanging with my brother I heard a rumor of a black 944 that is sitting tarped up in a driveway. Pressing my hand to my forehead and doing my best Karnak the maginificent impersonation I guessed that it will need timing belts. The youth with whom I was speaking, said "no" because it ran 6 years ago. Ha ha. Boy i had a good laugh over THAT one!. Yea, apparently he wanted to buy it and fix it on the cheap. Again, a hearty laugh. The bits and pieces that I put together seem to indicate an aborted clutch attempt. Speculation as to what could have caused such a simple and straightforward process to go awry abound. I was already drinking, so I decided to lay the truth on him about the timing components, the incredible PITA that the clutch is, and the hideous cost for parts and labor (IF you can find a competent mechanic) Just for fun, I had him call up the dealer and get a quote. It would have been funnier if the service dept gave him a quote, but, they flat out refused and hung up on him. Oh well, at least the parts department gave him a quote on a clutch kit and a timing component kit. (he wouldn't tell me how much, but he visibly blanched at the number) It is a small town, I visit it regularly. Should I track down this rumor and find this car? I haven't really finished working on the Porsche I am driving. Is this some kind of madness to want another? With special tools in hand will I be destined to seek out and repair derilict rollers?

fools rush in
OK, that was a steal. I am usually not so lucky.
I will keep it all in perspective. A roller is worth next to nothing. A roller that is missing pieces...ya pretty much have to pay me to take it away. This is not CA, this is in rural Texas. Ricers and muscle cars abound. Porsches are few and far between.

Semper drive!

Is that specific to a 924?
In my 944, I was checking this morning and found the formula to be 30 mph / 1000 rpm (2000 rpm = 60 mph, 3000 rpm = 90 mph). 5800 rpm would be screaming, but I'm not quite sure the car would reach that before busting apart somehow! ![]() Randy

My 944 scares adults

he most likely has the short fifth (924S) transmission which has a shorter fifth gear (no duh!) equating to higher rpms at lower speeds, but those lower speeds are faster than an early 944 that would have the tall 5th gear ratio....that should explain the difference between your numbers and petrolheads'

yep
Yes, the 924S has a shorter 5th than a 944. Less MPH per RPM.
5800 was actually pretty smooth. The engine had several hundred miles to warm up and was surprisingly quiet at speed. It sounded more like an aircraft engine than a car engine. It COULD have gone faster, I just didn't want to push it on unfamiliar roads in the middle of nowhere. Remember that this car hadn't driven anywhere in over 4 years. Discretion is the better part of valor. It truly excelled on climbing this really steep section near the military base. Even packed to the gills with cargo and luggage, it ate up the road like Roseanne at a buffet. An hour after I had decided to chill out, the headlights failed due to a bad switch and I had to drive "using the force" untill I could get to the next exit and effect repairs by jumping the headlight connections. Had I been moving at speed when the headlights decided to flicker and wink out I would have needed some really good upholstry cleaner at a minimum. BTW, in a pinch you can actually rebuild the headlight switch. I don't reccomend it as a long term option, but it did get me the rest of the way.
