Angry No dash lights - different problem?

Hi guys! I've been reading this forum, among many others, trying to solve problems with my 86 944. Problem that I'm currently trying to fix is that I have NO dash lights, clock light, etc... This problem stemmed from the dimmer switch being fried. I tried wiring in new dimmer (had to make my own bullet connectors as the plug was fried) and I got nothing except a hot dimmer switch. Additionally the HVAC fan knob has what looks to be a bulb melted into it. Are these circuits linked. I really only care about the dash lights as my clock has a radio in it.

As of now I just have the bare wires taped off and tucked. I would really just like to bypass the dimmer section all together and just have lights that come on with the headlight switch. I have to do an odometer fix as well soon, so i'm not shy about drilling fabbing things if someone comes up with a good idea. Think I could re-wire the lighting circuit to the light switch?

The dimmer is getting hot for a reason and bypassing it will only mask the problem until it causes further damage. If you see a melted bulb holder in the climate control unit, I would start by unplugging the unit and see if that solves the problem. The climate control unit is easy to remove and then you can just unplug the unit.
