cam belt tensioning problem on a 84 944

I followed the directions for adj. timing belt. When I set belt to specifications and turn engine to two complete turns clockwise and one and a half teeth counter clockwise, belt is loose on the long run of the belt.Clockwise belt is set at the right specifications.Anybody know how to correct this problem?HK

Which procedure and which tensioning gauge are you using? If you are turning the engine counterclockwise at the crank, the slack should be in the long run. If you are turning the engine counterclockwise at the cam gear, the slack will be on the opposite side of the long run.

You should take your tension measurement with the slack in the long run of the belt between the cam shaft sprocket and the sprocket on the crank. Turning the engine counterclockwise (1 and 1/2 teeth on the cam sprocket, approx 10 degrees) by rotating the crank will get you there. I have the cricket and the Arnnworx tool and have used them both. I found the cricket difficult to use for setting the cam and balance belt. Just my $.02

Good Luck,

A.J.

The whole point of the procedure is to get the belt worked into position, properly seated on the gears, then put all the tension on the long run.

Thats why it is 2 turns, then just a hair back. You're doing it right, and if you take all the slack out your belt will whine line crazy, demolish the rollers/tensioners and snap in a rather short time.

No whining

A properly tensioned new cam belt will not whine. the new Bal shaft belt tends to whine just a bit. If it howls at you, it it too tight. you want a half twist or so on the longest part of the belt. (I don't use tensioner tools, they confuse me, I go by feel)

the upper tensioner pulley on the Bal belt should just "skim" the belt.
