New engine, engine code questions

I bought a new engine for my '87
944 since the old engine blew up. I am trying to make sure the new engine is for '87. I searched and found that m44/07 was the code for a 944 in '87 and M44/09 is for '88. My engine code is M44/08 43h 61 940. Is this a 924s motor or is it the correct motor i order? I know the 924s had lower compression. Were there 944 motors that had this code?

Your new engine is an 87 944 engine (also used in the 924S that year) which came out of an automatic car. Should work just fine.

The 944 and the 924S had the same compression that year.

You may be able to get the VIN from the place you bought the engine from, but there is no VIN to engine number equation for these cars.
