Help Installing Short 5 th Gear

Anyone with experience installing short 5 th? Are there are special tools/proceedures required? Any tips? Does the transaxle have to come out if the spare tire well has been cut out?

If you have a cut spare well, you do not need to remove the trans. It would make life easier, but you dont need to.

swapping is fairly straight forward:
-remove rear plug (you will need a new one as the old one is destroyed removing)
-remove bolts holding aluminum tail housing
-remove main shaft bolt (under the now removed rear plug)
-pry off tail housing (be carefull not to drop the "outside" half of the bearing while removing!
-pull "inside" half of bearing
-remove snap ring
-press out the drift pin on the shift fork
-remove exisiting 5th gear grouping
-remove the bolt retaining the 5th speed gear on the secondary shaft
-pull secondary 5th gear

installing the short set is the reverse procedure. Be sure to loctite the shaft bolts upon re-assembly!

Hope it helps!
