Wheel Codes

I'm looking at picking up a set of 17" wheels and tires this weekend from someone down in SoCal (I live in NorCal) and want to make sure they fit my '88 NA 944. They are off an '01 or '02 Carrera 4 and the numbers on the wheels are:

Front - 7JX-17H2-ET55 & 986.362.124.01 & SSL-P14
Rear - 8.5JX-17H2-LT48 & 986.362.126.06 & SL 16-16

I'm not sure what the codes mean but the first number appear to give the wheel width and offset which seam to be a fit for the '88 944?

If anyone has more information or knows if the C4 wheels fit, please let me know.

here is a picture of them (I posted this a few days ago);

The front break down..

7J = width
17H2 = diameter
ET55 = offset , the LT48 marking on the rear denotes the same thing

The 986 is a Boxster prefix part #, though i have no idea what those were actually used on..if i had to guess its actually from the newer 987 Boxster but im really not sure.

They will however fit your late offset '88 no problem. As a rule of thumb, you can use most wheels with an offset of 55 +/- 10mm or so roughly. You have to take into consideration the width of the wheels also.. 10's are about the max you can fit on the font and 11's about the max on the rear. Tire size also has alot to do with that also.

Hi all,

I did get the 17" Boxster wheels yesterday and they fit perfectly and look pretty sweet. the best part is the car now feels so much better. The first auto-x is 3/15 so i cannot wait!!

Hey Jeff,

I've always LOVED those rims. Can you post another pic directly from the side? Also, to confirm, they just bolted right on-no alterations necessary? Lastly, what do you mean by they feel better-firmer, better handling, better ride....

LOVE the change! Congrats!

As you imagine, going from 15" m+s tires to the 17" wheels and tires shown above, the car now handles respectably.

With the Boxster wheels and tire sizes given above, they bolted right on with no mods whatsoever - no tire-fender contact in corners and bumps. I'm very happy with the fit.

here is a camera phone pic i took of the side profile with heavy sunset back light:
