Vibration

So, I replaced my transaxle mount and that eliminated some vibration I had in my shifter. However, I still have a lot.. I am suspecting motor mounts. However, the engine really doesn't move much when you rev it. If you put your hand on it, you can feel the vibration. Can the balance shaft fall out of whack??

Also, to me it seems that the vibration does not increase or decrease with RPM's

This is driving me nuts!!!

Hey, spent most of the 1970s in Owatonna~! Bored most of the time. Anyway, you can remove the front plastic cover of the timing belt setup, and check the position of the balance shafts at TDC. But, I'd check those motor mounts first. I finished up an engine out reseal, head gasket, FOES, this past month, and new motor mounts, etc. There was still vibration at idle, but does go away, for me anyway, once the engine warms up, or increasing rpm's. Good luck!

Thanks grendiers! Is there a way to check the motor mounts, or is it just replace and see?

Yes, there is not a whole lot of excitement around here.. But, its a nice area to live.

Any mods to that '58 Pam ?!?! LOL

Here's what Clark's has to say about it: http://www.clarks-garage.com/pdf-manual/eng-11.pdf

Long story short, it's possible but potentially difficult to check them while installed. Still, considering the effort involved in removing them and the cost of going straight for a replacement, it's probably worth the effort.

If the vibration goes away when you rev up over 1800 or so, it's probably the engine mounts.

The one on the exhaust side usually goes first, because of the heat.

If his motor mounts are not bad, what other culprit might be causing the low idle vibration?

You will get vibration at lower rpms if your lower balance shaft is 180deg off. Did your vibration occur or get worse after a belt change?

it can be worse if it's just a tooth or two off. that happens a lot more than people realize too. not sure about the 944, but the 968 balance belt is supposed to be retensioned 2400miles after installation, and again every year or 15k, whichever comes first.

The timing belt probably has about 3000 miles on it. I think I am going to pull the covers and have a look at things. I have new motor mounts coming. Should get those in next weekend.

Thanks for all of the great help!!

Remember that the marks on the balance-shafts and their alignment changed in '86. A lot of shops don't know about that.

Also torque-tube bearings going out can cause vibration.

Loose exhaust and/or exhaust-hangers.

If you have the original rubber centered clutch disc and it is starting to fail, you will get vibration as well.
