Odometer 84 944

The odometer and trip decided to quit all of the sudden. The speedo still works fine so I'm thinking the gear inside went. I have the 3 gauge cluster. Is it possible to replace a single gauge or does the whole assy need to be swapped out?

You can either replace the gear or just the spedo gauge.

Is it a huge pain in the ass pulling the dash cluster apart? It seems to be one big, sealed unit.

It is not easy and takes alot of time.

Clark's garage has the procedure on their website http://www.clarks-garage.com/ under the ELECT-06, Removing Early 944 Gauges section.

Hi, I have a speedo assembly with a working odometer for your 944 if you decide that you want to go that route. Email or PM me.

On the early cars, you can just pop the speedo assembly out of the guage pod. It's just a friction fit. Reach around the back of the dash (yes, you can get your hand back there) and pop the tach out first. There should be just enough slack on all of the wire connections to get it out. The wires don't have any clips and just pull straight out (you kind of have to do that by feel) Once the tach is out, you can reach in through that hole to disconnect the speedometer drive cable, and once that's done, just pop the speedo out.
Carefully un-crimp the black edging around the plastic, and once that's off, you can unscrew and remove the works from the housing.
On early cars, the odometer problem is usually due to a slipping gear on the shaft that's driven by the worm gear. A drop of super glue is usaully all it takes to fix it.

It is easy to get the speedo out if you have done it previously. I did a post on a way to fix the gear were you can see the "guts of the odometer. To get the odometer out, you need a small and big phillips head screwdriver, a flat head, and a 1'' socket wrench, and I think thats it. I disconect the battery anytime I work on ym car.
1. Pull the horn pad off. there is some resistance, but it pops off, take the horn wire off. Marke the 1'' steering wheel nut with a marker so you put that wheel back on staight. Take the 1'' nut off. There are 3 flathead screw that need to be taken off, do that.
2. Screwdrivers- the samll scredriver is for the ignition screw- there are 2 on each side of the ignition, very small holes.
3. There are 2 screw abover the tach. and gas guages, take then out.
4. Now I think you can take the insrument cluster out. I pop the gas gauge out and off and use my left hand to loosen the speedo cable (a SOB to get back on IMO) and diconnect the speedo wire.

My write up on the speedo gear. Good Luck hope it helps.
