LSD or Open diff??
So I need a new trans after my season opening track day yesterday. I am set up for DE and hope to make the jump to club racing next season. Do I go with a LSD or an open differential trans? Is the juice worth the squeeze?

Personally, I've never driven a 944 with one, and my 951 doesn't have one. But, in every other vehicle I've owned it is well worth it.
If you have the coin, absolutely go for it. Now is the best time to do it since you already have to yank the tranny. |

I'm going to have to replace my tranny now also. What would be the advantage of an LSD over the open for daily driver; or is there any? Since I have to save up for the purchase, it'll not make a whole lot of difference how long I save, other than I miss driving my toy.

I consider the LSD an advantage for the daily driver. In wet and snow conditions (not sure if you drive it in either of these?) it definitely makes a difference.

It's more important to match the correct gear ratio with your engine to achieve the best results. LSD is a great option but shouldn't be your first consideration. It is great on water or snow. Not sure how useful it would be at an autox but I don't usually spin my tires on the tracks I have been to.

LSD makes a world of difference. you'll actually turn tighter into a corner instead of just spinning one of the tires.
however, just parts don't make a fast car. just remember 90% of the speed lies between the seat and the steering wheel. |

See i would have guess 90 % would lie between the Front headlights and the fire wall.

My 944 race car has an open diff, but is getting an LSD soon.
When I started racing, I don't think it was absolutely necessary, while learning to race. But as my lap times have come down, I'm starting to be limited by not having it. I have an extra tranny that is about to be freshened and an LSD installed. My current tranny will then be the spare. |

over the past 3 weeks i just picked up 2 944 LSD trans . there is not a big price difference i got one trans for 350 dollars and the other for 425 dollars . i have one in the car now just to go racing and the 425 dollar one i'm rebuilding . the trans is good but becouse i'm using it for racing . i want to go throw it and replace synchronizer rings and gears along with seals and bearings . a locking dif . (LSD ) trans is a plus for racing or track days . but for street use ?????? thats up to you ! a good used trans with out LSD should run you about 125 to 300 dollars . unlike the people on ebay and other sights like that . were they think there selling gold ! bone yards are a far better place to look for used parts . i picked up the ones i have at what i think ? a good price . becouse the parts were sitting at the bone yards and they were not selling . when i was getting the trans i picked up an extra manual steering rack too . cheap 75 dollars . i'm going to rebuild it and install a quaife quick ratio rack kit .2 turns lock to lock . and NO quaife does not list the 944 as a rack kit they offer . but the racks in the 944's were not made for the 944 . like the transmissions they came from an other make of car .
